People have used all sorts, lux front bundy rear seems to be one of the better choices. In the US they use jeep diffs alot. One guy on here is using 80 series diffs I think and some have used MQ diffs before.

1.0 with a WT front & Vit rear slightly tweaked.....still a work in progress.

Bracketry removal is the debil! :bad-words:

A few people have used 60 series diffs too which have an offset rear like the bundys and 80 series. They are wider than lux/bundy diffs but narrower than 80s.
Chopzuki used GQ diffs too which turned out fawesome.

I feel that diff swaps are much like motor swaps, they cost twice as much and have three times the work that you were expecting.

Also, what suspension/wheelbase/lift/tyres/steering/gearing you planning on running?

i am planning on extending the wheel base more to the back with hilux fronts and i am thinking of running 33"-35" tyres with s3 rockhoppers and i might be changing the motor for a gemini diesel with a toyota sc12 or sc14 supercharger(but thats in the future) i already have RUF and 2" body lift

If you only want to run 33-35" tyres you could also save yourself some money and stuff a pair of WT Sierra diffs with HD axles.

I don't believe axle breakage is a problem with HD front shafts. There's been some reports on Pirate of TT Doubletoughs taking huge abuse without a problem - and some of our cars in Vic running 35" tyres and plenty of wheelspeed have had no problems.

The weak point then becomes pinion crush sleeves (fixed with solid spacers) and rear axles (fixable with cromo shafts - Calmini) or a full floating setup like a few of us are setting up here in Vic based on Vitara rear axle housings.

If this dearer than swapping axles? Probably. However, it results in a car with the lowest weight and highest ground clearance. I can't see the point in running housings, brakes etc designed for 3 tonnes of GVM whan all that's required is axle shaft strength.

If you want to go beyond a 35, and really get on it in the rocks, then there might be a case for bigger than sierra diffs, but once that happens, you'll be smashing sierra springs too, unis will be too small, etcetcetc - it might be time to look at somehting bigger.

Just my 2C.

flyinwall,

I just flicked over your build up thread - you appear to be very consious of spending so i would just be sitting back and waiting for something to pop up on the cheap.

Even though it is the labour that will cost the most, I think the 'core' (startup) costs are where the most money is to be saved - regardless of what diff or housing you end up with.

i.e. Sierra W/T front end could be anywhere from $200 to $500 when picked up second hand.

And all the little things can add up - sorting brakes, driveshafts, brake bias, U bolts etc can add up even if the diffs are practically free.
