Outer Limits 4x4 Board

ok so not exactly 4x4 tech... well not at all 4x4 tech really...

im doing a little project and i need a 240V electric motor, about the size of ya average 4inch grinder motor. i need it to be high torque, like a grinder, but low speed, something in the realm of 10-100 rpm...


any ideas?

if you want it to be that small you will need a motor with a reduction gear box on it. What do you want to use it for???

we use a few slow speed setups on pumps. gearbox + electronic speed control.

well my mate wants a similer thing to make an auto opener for his gate over the driveway.
i want to build a spit that can take a full cow... yes i know thats a lot of meat, but every now and then its needed...

Why not use an ordinary 240v motor, and V belt drive, to a bicycle wheel on the end of the spit. You could also drive one wheel off the motor, and then drive a second wheel attached to the spit off the hub of the first wheel. Sort of double reduction.

Bicycle gears backwards, using the crank gear on the driven side and the smaller gears on the drive should be able to get 5-7:1 or there abouts, and drive it from an el-cheapo 2 speed 240 volt drill in low gear.

Or you could user the el-cheapo drill with a drill speed controller (light dimmer).

Depends on how much torque you need.

(for the spit you could use the usual cotter pin arrangement of the crank gear on the shaft of the spit so you can easily manage the impaling of the cow)

with a spit a chain driven is preferred. direct drive you risk cooking the motor. not sure if V belts would stand the heat.

the old man built one about 20 years ago from a washing machine motor, and a few old cement mixer pulleys. done heaps of spits and never had a problem with the belts. Despite what most people think a spit doesnt need to spin as slow as you commonly see, just not stupidly fast.

i built one for camping that takes a few small roasts from a windscreen wiper motor and adjusts the speed with a dash light dimmer pot make sure u get one with metal gears tho as the plastic ones melt (mate of a mate makes them for the markets n found out the hard way)

yep, got one ov them already, starts to struggle once you are cooking for more than about 60 people.

electric motor power(EMP) in bayswater have 3.4.5" motors in almost any voltage with your choice of reduction gearbox. i used to work there and they deal with the public.
maybe even a wheel chair motor and GB they are low speedhigh tourqe. we used to do a lot of them. if not you can get what you want made.
