I am looking at buying a GQ to use to tow my comp rig on a trailer.
A nice looking GQ with a 2.8 has come up for sale localy and Im wondering what they tow like?
I was thinking of finding a 4.2 diesel and throwing a turbo kit on would be the way to go, but are the 2.8s much chop?
Cheers

They are a brilliant lttle donk for there size ...but to tow what you are thinking is just stretching the friendship more than a little. A lighter powertrain...smaller engine will be a bit short to tow heavy stuff.
Having said that ...I tow a off road camper trailer with mine to some faraway places from here, but only use 4th gear when towing...and camper max,s out at aboot 1100 kg gross...so is not a real big ask of an otherewise really sweet donk n gearbox.
I reckon 4.2 donk in either petrol, diesel, or gas for wot yu wanna do.
HTH.

So does the 2.8 have a different (weaker) gearbox to the 4.2?
The whole reason Im thinking of a Nisan is because of the driveline strength over a cruiser.

Yes the 2.8 has the same gearbox as the RB30 and I think VL Commodore. They generally $hit a cluster bearing after a couple of hundred thousand kms if they have been used for heavy towing in a previous life..........
