hey guys, was looking at buying a soft top sierra. my mates got roof racks for his which mount to the top of the windscreen, and to the 2 pillars behind the doors.
do you think this would support the weight of a 27kg kayak?
would it be too close together to be safe once tied down?..

External roll cage time, i mean load rack time.

27kg to me suggests it's atleast around 4m long. Once it's up there and balanced evenly across the two racks, it shouldn't be an issue, but i personally would have something further apart

Maybe add a removable load rail at the front to help out?

It was a temporary solution to a situation where the whole of east Victoria was flooding and I had holidays along with some mates. The areas we went to were not 2wd/awd friendly so out came the zook for a 4hour drive east from melbourne with the kayaks strapped to the roof, lots of water crossings and 4wding on normally 2wd dirt roads... good fun.

All i did was put some closed cell foam over the soft top where it rests on the B pillar so it wouldn't rub through the material. I used cam straps through the A to B pillar support rods to hold the kayaks down and tied them off to the tension strap points on the rear for the soft top.

This isn't a really good long term solution but it can be done. Those boats combine weight would come to just over 30kgs.

My kayak hangs off each end of my van
The overhang would be illegal if I put it on the zook

Get an old boat trailer
Have a look at the set ups on akff.net.au (Australian Kayak Fishing Forum, its like outers but for yaks)
