Max PRE-turbo EGT's for 2H ??

As per title - any opinions? Mine currently max's around 550 if i really flog it - too hot?

Also coolant temp sits at up to 98deg on the highway if i give it a hard time on a hot day, otherwise it runs at around 90 - are these acceptable?

Coolant temp sounds ok.

I remember reading something most likely written by Dumbdunce that 550C is on the money.

One reason i ask this is that i noticed my overflow bottle has been emptied over the last 500-1000km - I hope like all hell i can find a leak! Otherwise should i suspect a cracked head/blown gasket? No apparent oil/water mixing.

Engine is (fresh) 2H w/GT2860RS, PWR water/air cooler, 14psi.
It gets up to 400 pretty quick, slowly to 500 then crawls to 550. Could probably go higher but never had a long enough hill to test it out.

My understanding was that max POST-turbo EGT's for most diesels was around 550deg...equating very roughly to around 750deg pre-turbo?

Pressure test the cooling system and find your leak.

They are prob in the bible the figures I talk of. There is a fair bit about 2H turbo's. Running 14psi sounds a little high.

Those numbers look ok, good thread here: http://www.outerlimits4x4.com/ftopic121 ... ht=1hz+egt allbeit relating to 1hz's tho. That boost level is probably ok on that turbo is it would still be efficient, thus keeping the heat down in the head. You could go 1 more step and fit an thermocouple into your intake to watch intake temp aswell. Is the eastegate set at 14psi or is that what you are reading on a gauge?


To try and get your EGT up do a 3rd gear run up melba highway to the kinglake turn off with as much pedal as you can, should give you a good idea on temps.

Sorry mate no idea - haven't had it on the rollers. Plan on getting a proper tune one day though.

I'll have to have a crack at checking the system. I do recall finding some oily/coolanty mix on the bottom of the turbo but at the time i put that down to an engine bay spill - will have to have a closer look (hard to detect a leak when water evaporates or blows away instantly!)

Thanks mate. I'll probably bring the boost back down to 12psi as i didn't get a whole lot of gain @ 14 (maybe at the flow limit of the pre-comp chambers?). I'm reading off the gauge from the butterfly (manifold pressure). I plan on getting a bunch of sensors and checking out all my temps - mainly to see how efficient my 'cooler is and if a bigger cooler would be beneficial.
Looking at other threads my EGT's seem to be remarkably low - I may try and get a hold of another sender just in case mine is dodgy (new VDO gauge and screw in probe style sender) It's screwed into the manifold which is a split design. It runs through to the opposite side through a hole in the divider (if that makes sense). I can't see how this could cause any problems?

Been there done that. 3rd is too slow and i can't go round corners quick enough to go flat out in 4th the whole way. I'll try again with the swaybar back in the front ;)

Can anyone see a problem mounting the EGT probe in the manifold (split design) like this? I understand the readings might 'favor' 3 cyls, but should i be getting accurate max temps still? (assuming all cyls are operating correctly/uniformly)

i wouldnt see a problem in mounting the egt probe in a manifold like that.

thats fine, and what you are running boost wise and pre turbo degrees i am also...600 is a limit you should not go past for too long...700 maximum for maybe a few seconds...but i limit mine to 600...and it is rare to get above 550. Is 14 pre intercooler or post?? you will loose 1 or 2 psi as charge cools down.

Nice drawing! :D

As far as I've been told, the actual thermocouple is in the tip of the probe, so I can't see any advantage installing it as you've shown. You may as well just insert it into the first chamber.

This was my understanding also - so i suspect there would be no real disadvantage in mounting it this way either. Just wanted to confirm my thoughts really.
