Will original wiring handle it?

Landcruiser 60 series.Original alternator is 55 amp,when replaced with an 85 amp alternator will the original wiring be up to the task or should it be replaced?

Hi Stockhouse, the original cable will handle the current to the point where it simply limits how much current can pass through the cable before there is a voltage drop.

It would probably pay you to replace the cable between the alternator and the battery as it was probably not all that thick for the 55 amp alternator, a common situation on most older vehicles.

You can leave the old wiring in place.
Just add a second quality wire from the ALT to the battery.

All of the extra stuff IE: lights ect. would be wired straight to the battery, so no extra load would be placed in anything els.
