Transfer case position

Hello all,
just wondering how far you can move the transfer case back before
you start to run into difficulties on a 1lt Zook.
I am planning a conversion but would need to move the transfer back and then extend the front shaft and shorten the rear shaft.
On first inspection I will need to move the transfer back about 25cm.
Can it be done?
If it can can it go back any further?
If you have done this how far did you move it?
cheers

You will have to be careful of the crossmember that sits behind the xfer case, coz it might get in the way.
If you move the xfer case back that far you are going to have problems with driveshaft angles. Are you stretching out your wheelbase at the same time???

James,
That's a big change. When you first told me about it I thought it would just be a little bit. Can you get another gearbox to suit that is shorter? A 250mm shift is over 12% of the wheelbase - I'd consider that major. The x-member will probably need to be moved or a new one fabbed up that won't foul. This isn't too much work. But you rear shaft angle will be big unless you do what Damo said and extend the wheelbase.

Get a double cardin tailshaft made. Yes they're expensive, but in most cases the alternatives are a whole lot more time and money for a inferior fix.
Alternatives include- re angle the transfer (now you'll really know about driveline whine) , shorten the jackshaft ( hmmmm), replace the unis a lot, wear earmuffs, clock the transfer over or bootie fab a crazy chain drive drop box off the rear output mud racer style.

Even with a cardan jointed shaft the shaft angle is going to be pretty severe. How much lift and wheel travel you have is also going to make a difference.
I cant see this being practical unless you stretch the wheelbase out.
Are you doing the gemini engine thing?

i know a guy selling a used DOUBLE DOUBLE cardan driveshaft to fit suzi yokes, it is pretty impressive looking and will handle some insane angles, two cardin joints, one at each end!!

So he's selling a shaft that turns your car into a giant vibrator?
Excellent , the lady pleaser 2000!
With two double cardins isn't the shaft going to move in a oval shape?

I think we have figured it out. A way to put it all in place without shifting the transfer case and without changing the gearbox for a shorter one.
Will have to see if it works and if it does I will give details down the track.
Project now moving forward again.

Well acutally the budget will not be effected at all.
Like many things you have to weigh up all your options and with a bit of know how and time you can usually get things to work. Or maybe you see another way through and that is the way you go
Gives a lot more satisfaction in the end when you can do it yourself and not have to pay top get it done. Isn't that part of the satisfaction of modifying your vehicle without having to buy all mods off the shelf.
