Is Upgrading To 16" Rims Worth It??????

im runngin 15x7s now and buying brand new tyres and thought maybe going to 16inch rims and tyres would be a good idea

just wondering your thoughts

im running 33 x 10.5 x 15 so i have alot of side wall and thought maybe reduce it by running 16inch wheels.

16 inch wheels are more expensive, one negative, but you normally open up your options for tyre sizes too. Less sidewall means better control but more wheel to destroy on obstacles.

Question is why do you want to go to 16s other than reducing your sidewall height?

I'd only consider going to a 16" to fit the 35x10.5-16 silverstone extremes.

plus i can run most of my mates tyres cause there all running 16s
just if im spending 1500 might aswellupgrade to 16s
new patrols and more are now running 17s and up

by running 16's the tyres also "look" smaller thus not attracting "as" much attention from those we wish not to.

Find the tyre you want to buy. Then find out what rim you need to suit that tyre. Idealy let the desired tyre dictate your rim, dont choose the tyre just because you want a 16" or 15" rim. If the tyre is available in both sizes then worry about it after you know the price difference between the two.

I think you are mistaken. 33x10.5x15 is not that uncommon.
Couple of others in 33x10.5x15:

Radial TSL
TSL Bogger

This list is rather unsorted and incomprehensive and made up of more aggresive type tyres, but makes the point that there are other tyres in that size, even though the 33x12.5s are still more common.

silverstone extreme dont make them anymore they had too many problems with there tyre holding air i was told by silverstone themselves

simex do but there twice the price and they acually measure over a 34ich so thats not good for me lol

havent seen boggers or swampers but frommemory only 11.5 or 12.5 in width plus i dont think there road legal anyway

Chapel Corner have ceased importing the 33" size as there were too many issues with that size only.

The 35x11.5-15, 35x10.5-16 and 31x10.5-15 are the only sizes available in Aus at the moment. These are selling strongly with many happy customers.

OK, 2 against 1. Thats dissapointing. I own the 31s, bought them about 8 months ago and the 33s were still available then.

we've found the MT117 sport to be a far better tyre for all conditions over the extreme. out in tracks you couldn't really spot the difference in performance on two similar zooks.

Its just that the sport is not available in the 33x10.5 like wideaz is chasing; they have the 33x12.5. If you go the 16" rim, the most suitable size is the 285/75R16 (size mentioned above), which is still ~11.3" wide, it depends how fussy you get on width, personally I think thats on the border of too wide, buts thats just my opinion.
Ive never used the sports or seen them in action; but I must say the Extremes are at their worst on gravel roads, just so little sideways traction, its like ball bearings sometimes.

I am actually surprised at how many tyre companies makes 12.5s and not 10.5s in 33s now that Ive had a look around. Some other metric 16" equivelents (if they exist):
255 x 0.85 R 16 (33 x 10)
265 x 0.80 R 16 (32.7 x 10.4)
275 x 0.80 R 16 (33.3 x 10.8)
275 x 0.75 R 16 (32.2 x 10.8)


If people want to calc metric to imperial tyres it easy, I'll use a stocko Sierra tyre as an example (205/70R15).
Carcass width is the first number, so 205 = 205mm. divide by 25.4 = 8.07"
Sidewall height = width x profile. 205 x 0.7 = 143.5mm = 5.65"
Overall height = Rim + 2xSidewall Height = 15 + 2x5.65 = 26.3"

How recent is this information about the Silverstone mt117 xtreme not being available in 33x10.5-15 anymore?
I order a set two days ago. They arrived and were fitted today.
Top looking tyre. Can't wait to give them a run.

i'm running about 18psi on road and off i run about 10-12 depending on my load. the sidewalls are fantastic and very compliant. will see if i can dig up some pics of the tyres in action.
