40 series diff with a handbrake on it

i have put a 1HZ into my shorty 40 and now have no handbrake due to the old one being located on the transfer case, wondering the easiest way to get a handbrake onto my diff (and if anyone can help me out with parts)[/b]

you can go with a set of 60s backing plates and make a set of cables to suit or if you wanted cound go a complete setup of a 75 disk brake rear end will bolt streight in and just make the cable.

Why not just use a late model 40 axle that has the integral handbrake?

or say f*ck it and go buy some 60 or even 80 diffs and get width while you are at it.

go a 60 rear diff with the hand brake bits then get a cable from don kyatts for the bj42 (its a custom lenght) but should fit with no mods.
You get the extra width of the 60 diff and can use the handbrake from a bj42 (maybe get the handbrake parts from a later model 40/42/45 or 47?)

I may be wrong, but I believe there were not any 40 45 47's that came factory with the handbrake on the rear axle. I am sure that there is two types of rear axle housing, early and late. Early has eight bolt holes on the end of the tube, late has four bolt holes which can accept 60 - 75 series rear drum brake components to convert to a handbrake on the rear drums.
A rear disc 75 series rear end would be nice, but it wont just "bolt in" and work: you would need to change to a disc - disc master cylinder, and also change front calipers to the larger 45 x 4 mm pistons. Probably also need the larger dual diaphram booster.
You could consider fabricating a disc rear conversion, however this can end up being costly and not as effective as a factory setup depending on what parts you use. (I have just done a disc rear conversion on my 60 series, if I had to do it again I would just use all factory 80 or 78 79 parts)
I would recomend using a late model housing that accepts 60 - 75 series rear drum brakes and hand brake. It will work with what you have, (do you have discs on the front?) parts are relatively easy to purchase, no stuffing around having to make brackets, it will work quite well and pass a roadworthy with out any issues whatso ever.

thanks for the feedback guys, yes i have discs on the front end, mine is a 1980 BJ40 with the 8 bolt pattern backing plates on the rear, so looks like im up for a new housing
the 75 diff will not bolt straight in, same width but the spring perches are about 40mm wider from memory, i can fix that tho.
also with the 60 stuff, it's wider and also wider spring perches. maybe it is time for a 60 diff conversion, but isn't there major hassles with the front housing- spring perch and the diff pumpkin or something? i gotta keep it spring under

Stoive I have a 4 bolt 40/5/7 bare rear end, its yours if you want it, only issue is it is in Cairns....
All you need then is some 60 series brakes/backing plates, and a cable. That way you have the same track front and rear, with out having to cut brackets off diffs, put new front ends in etc etc....

I have the 8 bolt housing and used 60 rear drum setup. I just had the 60 backing plates drilled to match the 8 bolt pattern and bolted them up. Then I used a 60 rear handbrake cable joined to the standard 40 cable with a booty fab adjustable joiner.

go the 60 series housing and move the perches
you dont HAVE to do the front as well.. rear would be easy..
