hey mate,
I've got the same issue with my mav. same engine as yours.
Drives me up the wall. using way to much fuel with no power down low and a but backfire or miss.
Anyways.
you can get the whole carby rebuilt.
I'm in newcastle and there is a company here called allcarby. they said it would cost $700. for a full rebuild and tune.
you could get the carby kit from repco or super cheap.
I priced a kit from autopro and its about $90 if you can do it yourself, plus then a tune.
I'm tossing with the idea of getting an after market efi kit for it for the states. costs about as much a carby rebuild and the people that i have spoken to reckon that the car is heap better off with one on it. Better power, torque and fuel.
Good luck.

Thanks Dave
I'll give it a go!!!!!
yeh sure man.
Its got a very unfortunate name really. but it seems to have a pretty big following.
MEGASQUIRT.
Its a complete DIY fuel injection kit.
If you can solder and have some time and patience, you save about $300 on the total unit. They sell them imcomplete. You have to put all the peices on the PCB and wire it all up yourself.
Have a look on DIYautotune.com
The company has a hgue website and forum like this one....just bigger.
where you can talk with people about any issues tuning your car or building the unit.
There are a heap of examples of what people are using it for as wel. Everything from homemade turbine jets, to race cars and tractors.
The forums link is
msefi.com
and you should be able to slick on groups, and go to the australian forum and chat with people.
I was emailing a guy in Perth with it in his comp GQ. he swears by it, thinks thats its the best mod he ever did for it.
But as you can tel. i'm pretty hoked on the idea.
and since it only costs about $600 (cheaper thena rebuilt carby) why not go for it.
You can also use two maps fro teh engine. one fo lpg and petrol.
Anyways if you wanna know more ask.

carby issues
You can buy a complete reco carby from re-carb at Kunda park on the sunny coast for about $250 exchange or a carby kit for $68 from repco and do it yourself
$700 for the carby rebuild sounds steeeeeeep as.
I think I paid about $30 for a carby kit at repco; maybe this has a bit less in it than the $700 rebuild would involve, but still...
When I took mine apart there was no wear of any kind I could see on the metal parts. So the kit with rubbers, gaskets etc seems to me to be enough to get the carby back to as-new condition, if you give it a good clean as well.
It is not a complex carby so I wouldn't think it's too hard to clean. For me, I used only ONE piece of rubber out of the kit and it fixed my problem; I left the rest alone.

This is not legal advice.
The simplest EFI conversion for a TB42 imho would be the one that (I think) Bru21 did - raid an EA Falcon which had a 4 litre engine with throttle body (not multipoint) fuel injection. This is more like an electric carby than more advanced EFI; singe-point etc and runs at lower pressure. It is very nearly bolt-on-and-go, and I would say you'd probably get all the bits for under a hundred bucks at a wrecker. A search in this section (Nissan) would find the thread.CruiserPatrol wrote:It looks good, but unless I'm missing something you only get a programmable controller in this. You still need a throttle body injectors and all other hardware to use this???
Dave
I tihnk you are right about the megasquirt; you'd need some parts from a TB42E such as the injection manifold to get it running I think. Far too much effort imho.
Edit: here is the EA falcon efi conversion thread: http://outerlimits4x4.com/ftopic17505.php
Photos are down, I guess someone could ask Bru if he still has them or if he is beached as.

Yeh the carby place is dear as bro.
They must be beached as hey bro.
love it.
Anyways. seems every place i talk to just points me in there direction. so i guess they have the market here in newy.
I've pulled mine apart and checked all the gaskets and what not. Seems fine. I couldnt see anything wrong with it, and it all seemed to work great. like the float and needle and seat.
but still floods like a B&^$#.
I beleive that the EA throttle body fits on once you oval out the mounting holes. Nothing too drastic.
But yeh your right cruiser. You still need other parts to complete the set.
However, the unit can run off any model part.
that guy in perth is running pulsar injectors, with mitsubishi sensors and a front abs sensor off a ford for the ignition timing.

Some more info on rebuilding would be nice. As I want to rebuild my carby so I can sell the car. But have been putting it off as I dont know how big of a job it will be (also got a gas mixer on top).
Its that or I will find some place that does rebuilds or rebuilt exchanges and just do that.

if you have a gas mixer above the carb, it does not need a rebuild, just a good soak in carby clean.turps wrote:Some more info on rebuilding would be nice. the carby waxes up from the LPG if you dont use petrol often enough.
pull the mixer off, and start the car on petrol, and hit it with clean r carb , make sure you spray it in the bowl vents aswell,
and spray it down every offifice that a vacuem hose is attached at the base of the carby aswell.
jes
PS, you need to rev it a fair bit while doing this.

Tried that. will try it again. I might also have a fuel pump issue. As it want start on Petrol, but with some encouragement from 'start you bastard' then it runs. Alittle rough when cold though.jessie928 wrote:if you have a gas mixer above the carb, it does not need a rebuild, just a good soak in carby clean.turps wrote:Some more info on rebuilding would be nice. Also when I put the mixer back on. I dont think I sealed it properly. As want start on gas either.

maybe your floats sticking ( common on lpg trucks) , to test the fuel pump just crack the fuel hose and crank it. ( i doubt its the pump but its possible)turps wrote:Tried that. will try it again. your petrol cut solenoid may be stiking aswell
and a tip for start ya bastard, you dont need to spray it down the carby, pull of a vacume hose and the pump it down then re-attach. I use this as a temporary start when the starter is s oful of mud it wont turn the engine over

Been pulling the hose of that goes to the rocker cover. and spraying down there. As I can reach both it and the starter at the same time.jessie928 wrote:

Thanks for your help Jessie, when I get time next week I will have another play and actually take more note of what it is doing.
