Hi all. Fitted a boost gauge to my 3ltr TD patrol. I'm getting alot of different readouts on the gauge. It boosts mainly 17-18psi but spikes in some gears at 24 and also varies depending fow much I am excellerating.
Is this normal. can somebody shed some light on this.

This is normal behavior for a patrol ZD30 engine.
The computer drops the boost to allow the EGR system to put exhaust gas back into the intake manifold. (Emissions sh1t. Not required.)
25psi is way too high. This is also a "normal" fault from Nissan. The boost controller doesn't do a good job of controlling boost spikes.
Fit a dawes valve before you blow the motor.

Hi Skegbudly was just wondering this dawes valve you mentioned, I am not familiar with this. Where does it go and what does it do. Do you have a pic of one fitted up. Thanks

Hi rippin,
A dawes valve is a mechanical boost limiting device from 3bar racing in the states.
Its basically got a spring loaded ball bearing inside that opens up when a pre set boost level is reached. This then adds some air to the vacuum controlled boost solenoid reducing boost till it reaches your pre set level.
Most of us set it at around 16-18psi as the ZD30 doesn't make any more power after this. 18PSI is regarded a safe boost level for these engines.
The only place you can get one is from 3bar racing. Very good value for money at $35usd.

Chaz, whitie & others on Patrol4x4.com have done a lot of r&d on boost control for the ZD30. I highly recommend you go there and do a search on dawes valve. Chaz has a website where he has done a great job documenting the dawes valve install. lots of pics here.

Ive basically done all the mods listed on his site as well as the mods on aksniss ZD30 reference document. My Patrol is now running full incab manual boost control. I have boost all the time when I need it and it doesn't vary like it did before. Its a lot more drivable now and has lower exhaust temps too.
I'm happy to give you a hand installing the dawes valve if you like. Once you understand how it works its pretty easy to install and setup.
If you want some pics I can take some when I get back from Cairns at the end of the week.

Thanks Skegbudly that has helped me heaps. I might just take you up on that offer with help doing the install. See how I go. Just need to work out what items I need from that document. Thanks again.

The document is great sooner u block off that EGR fit a catch can and boost + Pyro guages The sooner u will save your engine. My boost doesnt fluctuate as much as others say it might be because i have the Dtronic fitted. My 2002 boost around 15 - 17 psi and if u stomp on the throttle u can get 19psi . I backed off the screw on turbo took a bit of fine tuning. Just did a 300km round trip in victoria and averaged 11.2 litres per hundred. got as low as 10.6. 2 adults 2 kids and a car load of luggage Draws and 40 litre engel. Not bad.
Cheers
