The reason behind big tyres

Hey guys.

This is a really numbty question i know. but one that i havent been able to answer myself yet.

What is the point of getting bigger tyres?
Is it just so that you can lift the diff an extra inch or two off the ground.

It just seems like a lot of effort.
Body lift,
Suspension lift,
Gaurd trim,
Wheel spacers,

Why go to this much effort?

Or is it more like the Subpoofters you get in rice burners.
Look at me everybody, i need huge tyres and a massive lift and a gaurd chop to stop my nuts from, dragging on the ground.

Come on guys, be honest, whats the reason.

There are two main advantages from larger tyres,

1. lifts the diff's and also the approach, departure and ramp over angels of the vehicle,
2. larger tyres can be better on some outback trips as they are more inclinded to roll over imperfections in the roads made by trucks than smaller tyres i.e

^^ dont forget they increase the length of the tyres contact patch on the ground, giving more traction.

Also larger rolling diamater / height makes steps and ledges smaller compared to the tyre and makes them easier to got over / climb.

Imagine a 2 foot step with 31's the steps bigger than the tyre - now put a 38 there and the step is 1/2 that of the tyre making it easier to get up and over it.

What those guys said.

1. Clearance under the diffs
2. approach and departure angle
3. Increased "contact patch" and decreased ground pressure
4. Increased number of edges (lugs) to find traction
5. rolls over obstacles more easily

Ride a BMX bike across a rough track, then ride a fully rigid mountain bike. Which one rolls over obstacles more easily, and has better traction when climbing???

Whether it is worth it or not is another matter. Std size tyres, underbody protection and a good quality winch will still get you to most of the same places.

 ill have to make a alloy winch cradle for my mountain bike to save weight.. but where does the battery go?

dont forget they make you more attractive to the opposite sex as well as the local law enforcement! both important things to consider when thinking about purchasing 'bigger rubber'.

remember to use rivets to hold it together

I bought big tyres cause they look cool.

All of the local's envy my car now.

The other reason was because the tyre drone drowns out all of the other ratles my car has.

Ask Thorpy - its fully sick.

being such a light vehicle, i think rivets would be overkill... gaffa tape maybe? and paul should be able to fab up a mount outa cardboard for ya...

perform a simple test -

Try and drive up a gutter with a 35 inch tyre, and then try it with a skate board.

Is it still school holidays?

My Sierra originally had 26" tyres it now has 33" tyres. This gives about 3.5" of extra clearance. Its common for people in sierras to have 35"+ tyres. so around 5"+ of extra diff clearance..... Doesn't that make a difference?

Usually when people increase tyre size, width is also increased So you have a fair bit more ground contact.
Plus a larger tyre can protect the rim from damage, Higher side-walls puts rim higher above the ground, and a wider tyre which 'baloons' over rim will protect it.

you would be compensating for a small cawk if you had 54s...
but with 42s your saying i dont need those other 12 inches i got plenty.

54" is small.. if you get 12672000 " tyres your 4by will be in low earth orbit..

see i knew this would be a numbty question. but it was one that i hadnt been able to answer myself yet and jusitfy.

I knew that bigger tyres would give you 1" lift for every two you go up in size. But it just seems like alot of effort. I'm not really hacking on those that have the bigger tyres (maybe i'm just jealous that i've got standard)

It seems like alot of effort to go to.
Seriously where you just having a dig at us? Do you not understand the need because your fourby never leaves the bitchy?
I leave the road as often as i can man. My car just has standard tyres and a 2" lift that was on it when i brought it. I dont do hardcore with it yet, coz i dont have the experience. nor the tools to get out if i end up in shit.

The thing that threw me is that you go and get a 2" body lift, then you get 4" bigger tyres, yourve reduced your inner gaurd cleanance back to standard, so then you need the 2" suspension lift just to get more clearance. but then your tyres will still rub when you turn a corner, and when you flex it up.
this tool is kidding right?????????????
I maybe a tool man. but i tired to work it out myself and couldnt completly understand it, so are you trying to be is the bigger man and say yourve never asked a question before.

most guards have room for a larger tyre without any lift at all... a completely unmodified zuk can run 30's with just removing the front bar mounts and new rims (required to fit the styres anyway).... thats a 4" tyre increase with no mods... however you'd be mad not to add springs or clearance the guards to gain some flex out of it.

if yours has a little bit of lift its likely begging for some bigger rubber under there anyway =)

if bolting on 4 shocks, 4 springs and 4 bigger tires is 'a lot of effort' you maybe in the wrong hobby.

i think by "a lot of effort" he means "a lot of money"....

I usually buy the 12pack normal size rubbers...I dont wanna feel small in a big rubber :D

Its not how big they are, its how you use them...And why would i get the law enforcement involved? They dont have to know :D

Man i could go on and on......

Ask my missus :D

Serious note. i have 33's on a suzy
