it usually takes a moment 4 the light to come on, unless your moving 4wards in a dead straight line on level ground(should b prety much instant then).

sounds like an autolocking hub problem

they dont seem to have auto locking hubs, electrical plugs and vacume lines go to the diff centre

its an ADD(automatic disconecting differential) system. often called auto locking hubs.
the hubs are always locked to the axles, its just the diff disconects from the right?? axle.

yeah the diff disconnects from both axels

it is normal to have to wait a bit due to the teeth in the transfer lining up may hapen straight away or may have to roll for a bit .
if it goes in in ten metres of rolling it is ok

sort of .... the passengers side axel is made up of 2 halves + a collar (where the ADD is) and the passengers side gets disconnected but the drivers side stays in all the time (unless you have FWH's) and drive is disconnected at the transfer case.
So even if you don't have it in 4WD, at the very least the CV's & gears in the diff centre are always turning when your moving.

Could be a vacuum hose in the add system is leaking,
or the electric transfer motor and shift rods may have built up crap around them,
or the same with the add actuator and shift fork.

Surfs don't have auto locking hubs, they have fixed hubs that are normally replaced with FWH's

Yeh it is often confused with auto hubs by the ill informed
