gday guys
im lookin at doin a budget build for my surf as i cant afford to do a sas at the moment and want to be able to fit larger tyres and gain clearence have a few questions want to be able to run 35s

will be fitting 80 series coils and 75 series shocks to gain 3 inch in suspension will this combo work?

up front want to crank torsioin bars and add bj spacers diff drop etc will this match the three inches i should get from thr cruiser coils?

what ratios will i have to run for the 35s?

with add can the front diff be welded? only use car to drive 5ks to work and to my local tracks so steering wont really bother me?

if i weld my front diff would it be better to run a locker in the back or getting my lsd tightened up ?

if i had my panhard rod enginered with a threaded rod would it keep its durability or should i jus buy one?

thx in advance for the help as i have 2 4wds a boat 2 kids and a missus cant afford t chuck the chequebook at it will be one day mmm maybe i should sell the missus......

I would not weld the front diff on any vehicle, let alone one used on the road at all.

5 k's or 500 k's get to a corner in the wet and simply understeer into a pole with kids and wife. not cool really.

Also if your going to 35's on a surf, you will risk snapping cv's. welding the front diff so that the load will be forced through the tyre with the grip will increase this likely hood even further. then lifting an ifs car to 3 inches will further load up the cv's. might need to consider the cost of some axel/cv upgrades.

I would however consider welding the back diff. it will ruin tyres and tend to step out a bit in the wet but should be far more predictable than anything permanent in the front. and since your only driving 5k's it wont kill your tyres too fast.

Maybe I'm missing something here, but if your running FWH's what difference will welding the front centre make to a part time 4WD when running in 2WD on road ???

It would make no difference to the handling while the hubs are unlocked.

danssurf82 you said you are thinking of putting a locker in the back why not put it in the front and weld the rear or shim the rear lsd up. With a welded front the loss in turning circle may be a pain depending on what type of tracks you drive.

Agree with hilux79, when mine was IFS had a 4WD systems auto locker in the front and only occasionally used the ARB in the rear.

You will quickly leard a couple of tricks to help you get the front to unlock when you want it to for tighter turns.
Plus if you still have the ADD, you can use that to disengage the front as well if you undo an electrical plug on the passengers side of the transfer case, giving you access to 2WD Low ;) .

you may find the surf wont be heavy enough for the rate of the cruiser coils unless your only after the "cool" look

bog stock factory coils should be fine. uprated coils or lifted coils then you will have no chance of flexing. 80 coils are a very common mod for the surfs and they work well

Yep agree with macca, had factory 80 series rear coils in mine and was great for flex giving 3"+ of rear lift. I went to 80 series Lovells std height progressive rate springs only cause they were a bit soft when loaded up for camping trips, etc.

hey doug, did you have a BL with the 33s on it? or was it just the 3" sus lift?

Macca, yea 2" BL and still in there, needed it to clear behind the front tyres on full lock and compression.

cool, trying to get my 33s under with just 2" body and 1" sus for the moment...
