Behind the dash there are drain tubes that run from the cowl down into the engine bay. These get filled up with junk. Clean the drain tubes out. You may have to pull the air plenum sections out the clean it out properly.

I use a air compressor to blow all the leaves out, i don't know if this would work if it was heavily filled with leaves though

If you have not already done so, its well worth it to spend half a day to remove the dash, then remove the heaterbox and completely dissasemble and clean, as it will be full of crud. If you cant be bothered doing it properly, many people use a holesaw to drill a hole in the side of the box and use a vaccuum and airgun to get the crap out of the core.
To get the crap out of the intake grille, use an airgun as already suggested and if the drain tubes are blocked you could try poking the crap out with a coathanger.

i used a butterknife to ram it all clean on mine... since then i've been wanting to put flywire or very open weave shadecloth over the grille there to stop big leaves etc getting in... still havent though =)

if you get a chance defintely put aluminum fly wire in even if you run it through the vent and use some wire to hold it there while the silcone dires

You can either sikaflex it over the top which would look crap, you could cut the mesh to size, jam it through one of the slots, poke some sikaflex down onto edges of mesh if you can and somehow pull it up to stick on underneath, or the best way is to pull dash out, pull heaterbox out, and you have nice and easy access from inside car which you can neatly stick some mesh on. You can also clean out the heater box while it is out.
