FJ40 with Ford motor

Hi Guys,

My son just picked up a 1975 FJ40 for his first 4WD.

He has great plans for it as all 18yo do

My question is, the car has a 4.1ltr ford motor but it seems to sit very close to the firewall. Also the flywheel and clutch assembly are in the open :?

It looks to me as though the bottom half of the bellhousing is missing, although everything seems to be well secured and it drives well.

Does this sound normal or is there something missing :?:

Thanks in advance, Glen

Yeah the ford 6 cylinders do sit a fair way back and udually need to have the firewall on the passenger side clearanced for the manifold.

Sounds like you are just missing the inspection cover off the bell housing. Grab one from the wreckers.

The early bellhousings were like that, just screw some tin plate over it 1-2mm if you feel all motivated.

Aluminium would be good, as it wouldn't need paint, might need some small shaping!

As Ray185 said, go to a wrecker and get the bottom cover plate, sort of like 1/3 of a bellhousing but only made of tin basically. Had 1 of these motors in an fj55 years ago, it actually went reasonably well.... from memory i think my carb was changed to something off a later model ford tho I can't remember which 1. Someone here will know..

Thanks guys,

Once upon a time I had an FJ55 with a 2f as I recall it had a full bellhousing. When saw this one I was a bit worried that he'd got some sort of dodgy bros. conversion. I will check out the wreckers tomorrow.

BTW does anyone know a good wrecker in the outer east for these things?

I'm at Lilydale so Hall's is probably where I would have tried, that is where I used to go years back :)

I didn't think that the pinch a part type places would have had 40's in the yard. Maybe I'll go have a look there as well, it's always fun to poke around and see what they've got.

I'd suggest that the bellhousing bit that is missing is from the ford. The gbox mite be cruiser but the bellhousing is probably ford. Post pix 'n it'll be easier to ID. 6cyl fords from at least xw to xc... theres prolly lots more that the 4.1 came in too...
