MQ RB25 conversion

I have an '84 MQ KM160 & am thinking of replacing my L28 with an RB25 from a 1988 VL Commodore, has anyone out there done or know of anybody who has done this conversion? If so, what does it entail, how hard is it? Is it expensive? Alternatively, What about a P40? Are they any good? Same questions as previous. Love my MQ but wish it had more power but don't want to go the V8 route!:?:

I think some VLs had the Rb20
but I have never herd of a standard vl rb25
Also Look into a Nissan 280z engine for your patrol
For go fast parts

RB20d/e are in some R31 skylines (pintara like things)
RB20det/de are in R32 skylines
RB25det/de are in R33 skylines
RB25NEOdet/de are in R34 skylines
RB26DETT are in R32, 33 and 34 skyline GTRs
RB30et/e/(whatever the carb was titled) were in VL commodores, patrols and im sure some other shit.
RB30DET/DETT are a breed on 30 bottom end with DETT or DET head fitted
RB27DETT is a farkin beautiful engine that most of the drag racers build (one brand makes them in particular) and nearly all do 9 second passes in street trim.
if i got anything wrong please correct me.
as for the conversion, RB25DET out of a R33 would be kick ass in an MQ, mated to a GQ 2.8 diesel box and transfer.
RB30 efi would still be pretty kick ass, same thing, mounted to a GQ 2.8 diesel box
these are the same box attached to the RB30 in the GQ patrols

The RB30S was put in the patrol which is the carby version
the RB30E/T made their way from the Skyline into the VL Commodore, E series were EFI and the ET were the EFI Turbo'd.
a RB25 would be great in a MQ or GQ. MQ will be hard to mate up to even using a RB30 gearbox and transfer as the diff at the rear is offset and the GQ gearbox is straight out the middle of the box tailshaft.
a RD28T GQ would be a good donor for a RB25DDET Transplant as the Gearbox is the same as the RB30 and the RB30 and RB25 have the same bout out pattern. Seen a GU with a RB25 in it, man it flies.

My apologies, after having checked VL specs you are all absolutely correct, engine would have to be an RB30!

RB30 EFI is still going to be a pretty good conversion for an L28. it wont blows your pants off but it will be nice. if you add a turbo...... ask nutter what that feels like, he cant speak highly enouh of his.

I agree, I think you'd be pretty satisfied with the RB30 as compared with the L28. Not that the L28 is all that bad.

Getting excited about this, found a guy on another forum who has done the conversion, he said it was fairly cheap & simple! just had to drill out top bolt holes on standard MQ 4-speed bellhousing as they didn't quite line up, & modify engine mounts! he says the most expensive part was getting the EFI wired in! I have been given a VL donor vehicle with a recently recond motor (defected for suspension) so very cheap but will have to convert from auto to manual. Was wondering if maybe GQ bellhousing will go onto MQ box?

the RB will bolt to the L28 bellhousing but from memory the engine will be on a fair old lean..

Have found that out also, have elected not to go ahead, have decided to pump some steroids into my L28 instead!

Apperantly the efi head off the l28e engine which came out in the z series will bolt straight onto the l28 block, so maybe getting away from an engine transfer at all?

Yes, L28E! The EFI systems found on a number of vehicles utilizing the L28 will apparently fit my head! So am looking in that direction!

R31 Pintara's ran the CA20E not the RB20E/DE.
Some Japanese spec R31 Skylines ran the RB20E/DE/DET, the also ran the CA18E, CA20E, RB20E/DE and I am pretty sure the LD28 was an option aswell.
New Zealand got some RB20E powered VL's.

Thanks for your post mate, you're right it has been a while & sadly the project had to be put on the backburner for now for various reasons but am still hoping to go ahead in the near future although I've decided to stick with the L28 & pump some steroids into it instead!
