indicator fuse driving me nuts!

Hi guys,

getting desparate here! The fuse for the indicators keeps blowing on the wifes Vitara but only intermitently - if she drives it it blows, in the driveway I can replace it and it will work, then you start it and it blows (this is without using the indicators - if it is going to go it goes as soon as you turn the key on - doesn't matter if you don't turn the indicators on). Then you might replace it, start, works fine, then restart and it pops. No need to use the indicators - the fuse goes as soon as the power is on.

I have disconnected the loom to the column and switch - no difference. Disconnected the indicator lights - still no difference.

Hazard lights still work fine. I have disconnected the trailer plug as this can be a problem apparently.

Where do I go from here?

Any clues appreciated!

Have you had a look at the flasher relay? I think it's in one of the footwells on a vit.

Yup - looks ok, and like I said the flashers work, and it blows before you even try and turn the indicators on so I assume no power to the flasher at that point? Sorry, I suck at wiring!

hey mate........ check the hazard switch out. the indicators run through the hazard switch first then to the indicator switch... try disconnecting this and see if it still blows.......

Check the wiring diagram. What else is on the same fuse?

I had an intermittent problem with the brake light fuse blowing, which also takes out the horn. Couldn't find a problem with the horn, so drove myself crazy looking for a fault in the boot.

Finally called out the RAA (SA's RACV/NRMA...) Bloke looked at the wiring diagram, had a dig around under the bonnet, and said "Where's your other horn?" So I showed him the horn, and he said "The OTHER horn?"

Car had two horns (as shown on the wiring diagram  ) and the second one was tucked away under the battery. The +ve terminal had broken off, and was swinging in the breeze under the battery.

Occasionally, it struck bare metal rather than paint or rust...

I'd agree with checking this. Very common fault on commodores. Pop the switch out and unplug it for a day and see if it still blows the fuse.

Thanks guys,

the "other thing on the same circuit" was the problem - reverse light also on this circuit and it had the short.
