I would like to put an rb30 into my mates nissan gq, was wondering if the gearbox off a 2.8diesel bolts straight onto the rb30 with no modifications.

or can i change the bell housing to suit the rb30 to bolt onto the 4.2 petrol gearbox?

As far as i'm aware there is not an adaptor to fit a rb 30 to a 4.2 gearbox. I have heard people mention they were thinking of building one but have yet to see one.
I have been told that an rb 30 engine will bolt to a rd28 gearbox. I have not tryed it so cannot be 100 % sure. I hope your going to add a turbo or fuel injection at least. The rb 30 is good motor just a bit small for a patrol.

i was under the impression that a rb30 is the same block as the rb25 and rb26.

if thats the case there are a heap of threats on here that so those engines going in, and bolting stright up to it all.

Most people will say that with the rb30 block to put the rb26 head on it, that way yourve got the twin cams, but its a heap of work with oil and water lines needed.

Why not use a box from a GQ that's been fitted with an rb30 from the factory? I've got one here complete from bellhousing to transfer case that would need a rebuild.

im guessin cars already an rd28 ....the rd28 box is an identical bolt up as rb30 box, they also have very different ratios much better for crawling and more suited to bigger tyres.

I use whatever I find first when I blow one up.

with the motor do u know the gq rb30 has bigger sump and better oil pump?

also gq's don't crack heads like vl's due to better radiator height.

if plannin on turboing only series 2 vl, gq and late skyline blocks have oil and water feeds, early vl and skyline are not turbo ready.

thatll get u started.

Was originally a RD28T swapped to an RB25DET, then the block swapped to an RB30 with the 25 head/turbo for extra torque. Just a shame you can't get an adaptor so you can run the TD42 gearbox

Im on my 4th box in 12 months.....so yeah not great..if i go auto either 3speed or 4 speed holden (wouldn't touch the 4 but anyway) it will cost 6k+ by the time you build it get 2 sets of adapters (rb30 to holden) and (transfer to Holden), then lines, cooler, modifying shafts etc gets too hard.

There are aftermarket gear sets for the FS5R30A, they come in straight cut and standard cut, they are about $4600.00 trade, add 800ish for new synchros, $300.00ish for bearings and a manual that will take it adds up too.....so until i decide what to do i keep breakin second hand ones...

With that said their actually a tough box, usually in patrols only 5th gets noisey becuase tight asses try to use it at really low speed or when towing, if used right they can take lots (skylines and 300zx guys run 500HP and get lotsa life).

My mates GQ which i did identical setup to mine has done 30,000 more kays since turbos were added and is still on original box and still on clutch we did at conversion time.

Nutter, when you say you have blown the gearboxes up, what have you broken? Gears, shafts? What were you doing when you broke them? Have they all done the same thing? I've seen the way you drive(on the youtube links), and its fairly safe to say you don't baby the gearboxes. Just looking for the heads up on the potential weaknesses of these boxes, as i'm mid-way through a rb30 conversion modeled on yours, but with a twist, i'm going to run twins off a 1jz, on custom steampipe manifolds. Im not looking for massive power, but strong low end torque and fast boost response, hens the twins. I will post a thread once its all up and running. -Andrew (narnturbogq)

most common thing is 3rd gear shattering, same as skyline box so same weak point...problem is aftermarket gears are over $4000.00 a set.

last night I snapped an input shaft, don't stress too much though another patrol I converted has done 90,000 kays on its stock then 250,000 kay old box...it gets driven hard but not like mine.
