Turbo vs N/A rods TD42

Just wondering if td42 and td42t rods are the same size and weight etc.
Looking at turboing my td42, but, looking for longevity out of the motor as well as reliablity.....but some power would be nice!
Cheers, Dano

they should be the same rods, iirc same part number. Any how make sure you get a compression test done before embarking on this mission, your diesel motor will need to hold a good reading if your thinking of turboing it, otherwise it may need a rebuild first, then you should be good for rougly 12psi with basic or no mods, and it can climb from there to around 20

Cheers Cookie, the motor should be good, it's only done 200,000. But will still get compression test prior to this mission, should I accept it!
You say should be good for 12 psi with no mods, as in no fat copper gasket as a head spacer to lower comp? Or do I need one, don't want heaps of boost, probably start at about 6 pounds I reckon and go from there
Cheers, Dano.

I just turbo'ed my N/A TD42 GU and so far so good
Mine has just under 300k on it and runs a lot better with the turbo, feels way better too, revs smoother.
I haven't had my compression tested but it's been looked after and it's running well and starts easy.
I haven't tuned it properly yet as I'm yet to fit EGT and boost gauges.
But if you have the time/money do the comp. test and get your injectors looked at and get a proper tune.
I will do all that too...... sooner rather than later

Gq N/A td42 rods have a smaller little end than a Gu td42ti. ( 28mm to 30mm) A new Gu rod is $250 when I last checked. However lots of blokes run big boost on gq rods without probs. As for copper head gasket, Std is fine. Lowering comp on a indirect diesel will cause lots of white smoke.
Std screwed up pump should handle 15psi with good egt and ok power. Really any thing above that needs the pump to be modded( 11mm/ 12mm plunger and head ) to get the the full benifit from the boost.

Thanks guys, 28 vs 30mm, thats stuff all in anyones langauge. Like I said don't need big power, just need better drivability, smoother revving, more torque and a bit more power is always good......so I reckon under 10 pounds of boost will be great.
Is there any concern for water temps to rise dramatically for that much boost, with as little pump "fiddleing" as possible?
Cheers, Dano.

If your cooling system is up to scratch you won't have any problems!
It pays to give your cooling system a check up anyway, pull out the radiator, clean it, flush it and the block too, replace the thermostat and coolant and you're sweet.

Hey mate what year is yours.. Pre August 1993 td42s had bigger pistons and rods.
Some good info here...

The TD42 t pistons have a cooing chamber under the crown that lines up with the oil squirter. The little end is larger but so is the beam of the rod with the TD42t.

Thanks Gents, great info of P@trol forum, Very interesting re- piston and oil squirters. Must say I'm a bit pi$$ed off about mine being a 96 model, but will just have to limit boost to a low 8 - 10 pounds. Still beats my N/A slug I suppose
What can I pilfer a t28 off, does anyone know? 200sx??? WRX???
Cheers, Dano.

i have a t28 from a gtr skyline(they came with twin t28's) on by toyota 3B.
are you confusing this with a gt28 series?? there is a big difference between a t28 and a gt28. the gtr t28's have a ceramic exhaust wheel which aparently is only good for 14psi before it granades.

Not sure,
was searching around on outers, and came to the conclusion that a t28 was what I was looking for, due to their size wouldn't take 3 days to spool and would hold for a reasonable amount of revs. What I'm looking for is drivability, due to the fact the missus daily drives it, so boost off the bottom end is the most critical, and what I tend to drive on the weekends, being somewhat slow and technical crawls, etc.
What would you guys reckon???
Cheers, Dano.

I am currently gathering up all bits to convert my GQ to turbo.
By T28 that is a massive generaisation. The standard patrol manifold uses a t3 exhaust flange. I am going to use a turbo from an R33 GTS-t Skyline which has a t3 flange. The turbo has a ceramic rear wheel, which means no more than 12 psi, but, once it is all set up and running, its not hard to upgrade turbos later.

shooting an email or calling to Denco, AXT, DTS, Safari, asking them for your closest agent of their product. What they would recommend turbo wise, for your application
Other options are
Motsons, Turboglide, Dieseltec, AG Diesel, West End Diesel, JPC etc etc...
You dont have to front up to each one to get good info.

Have you rang Superior turbos at Toowoomba? They fitted my Denco kit to my 88 Patrol back in early 04. It included a 3" mandrel exhaust from dump pipe on.
I dropped it it off when they first opened and picked it up around 4pm. It cost me $3750 fitted and because I paid cash they fitted a timer for free.
Nearly 5 years on and still cant fault it.
Give them a call.

Well it looks like the project now has a direction.....I was today, given a GT28 in top nick, it came off an r32 GTR skyline.
So this is were its at for now, Once It gets sent to, say MR Turbo for a check over, then will be looking into manifolds etc.
Cheers for the replys and info guys heaps appreciated.
