Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Hey guys,

Just jumped on the forum after a mate told me that it would be the best place to start asking questions about what I should do to my new disco.

Underneath the car it has what i was told is a 3 inch lift which I reckon is more like a 2. Its got tough dog foam cell shocks and just 31 inch khumo all terrain tires on a set of 15 inch sunnies. It also has duel exhausts which sounds great with the V8

I would love to put a big set of muddies on it so I can have some fun but need to know what I have to do to the car so I can fit them under and so the car still runs well and nothing breaks lol. I realize that I need to cut the guards and have had a look on the LRA site at them but for what they are seem pretty pricey.

Has anyone got any ideas or advice for me on what I can do to my disco? even just simple things that help them off road

Learn to drive it as it is, it will still be a lot of fun, then once you find out what it's limits are, work out what you need to go further, IF you think you need to go further (people new to land rovers are ALWAYS surpised at how good they really are in standard form). You also need to work within the limits of what the law will allow. Some people want bigger tyres, other people prefer lockers to make the best of the tyres they've got, and yet others just make do! Enjoy

if you want tyres bigger than 33 inch, then you will probably need different diff ratios and wheel arch flares and you are right, they are as dear as poison.

Like Lucy said, take it out and see where its limitations are for where you want to go and then devise a plan.

Maybe some 31 inch muddies and a air locker are all you will need and keep the spending to a minimum.

I agree, once you've driven it a bit and watched others you'll know.

32" muddies might be a good option but any bigger and you need to do a lot of other stuff as well.

Agree - pretty much drive it as is. Maybe a winch and bar (should be able to get second hand for about $1500 - lockers are also great but wont get you as far.

If you go a rear locker you should also get hituff axles especially if you are planning on going bigger down the track.

If you get a winch and bar you should get a good winch bitch.

Both have their pluses and not many minuses so long as you can afford them!

Cheers for all the feed back guys . I haven't really got the money at the moment but I'm working on it. Gotta sell my cruiser and then I should have some money to play with I originally wanted a 75 series ute and finally ended up getting one, decided to do a full overhaul on it. Stripped it down to the chassis and built it back up from the ground. Just in the stage of painting it at the moment and hopefully will have it back on the road at the end of next week

The family have always had land rovers, dad loves them. Ive been driving a 1997 Rangie for the last year and love it to bits but don't trust it off road. Have had a few computer problems with the air bags which left the car sitting on its bump stops. Looked cool but rough to drive . Have taken it up a few hill climbs and was really surprised at how well it went. I was thinking about getting a gu patrol but then would have had to spend a lot of money for a good one and then wouldn't have wanted to get its scratched and dirty haha. That's why I ended up buying the disco . Cheap fun! Have definitely got my moneys worth out of it And I'm really amazed at how good the clearance is in the middle of the cars! they will go over almost anything unlike the cruiser haha

I've just put a bull bar on it but really don't like the look of it. Does anyone know where I could get a second hand ARB one? I'm really thinking of putting lockers on the front and back. Would end making some rock sliders too and using them as the air tanks Any ideas roughly how much air lockers and a good compressor would set me back? Also has anyone got any photos of rock sliders they have made? Are the hituff axles as strong as those maxi drive ones? Are they a better price to?

Thanks for the advice there rr215. I'm going to have to sort out a clunking noise that I get under the car. It happens when I'm going slow with my foot off the gas. The car gets into a rocking momentum and and something underneath starts to hit making a clunking noise. I've replaced the ball joint on the back which helped a lot but I'm sure there is something else that hasn't been done right when the car was lifted. Also there is a bit of noise in the gearbox through the gears. All that and a million oil leaks need to be fixed but I'm just topping it up at the moment and trying not to think about that ... haha...

I think with the tyres I might just get the biggest flare kit and put that on then just put some 32 or 33's on. Probably cooper stt's. Then if I want to go bigger later the guards are already done. Does anyone know what the biggest legal tyre size that you can go on a disco in Queensland? I'm sure the car is probably already over with 31's on.

I do a lot of driving in the mud, some hill climbs but not that extreme, I really don't enjoy backing down hills haha and once or twice a year go next door to Fraser Island

Gday m8, I 2 have got my 1st disco.

I am ALWAYS AMAZED at the prices I get quoted for anything at all that I want to do (mods) or what has to be done (maintenance).

I have the LRA flares ( DONT GO FIBERGLASS! ) for my 35" Maxxis bighorns.

I have 2-3 " suspension lift no bodylift gunna try and avoid it by choppn rear 1/4s off, trying to avoid because of cost.

I haven't done a lot of wheeln yet as the tyres rub on the flares, so far only where i'm gunna cut 1/4s.

I have front and rear maxi drive lockers and axles to be fitted as soon as i win the lottery.

I will never understand why they are SO expensive to do ANYTHING with.

The ONLY thing that I have done to it that is on par with other makes of vehicles is a dual fuel conversion $2800.

With these thirsty f#ckers, I made my money back $800 (rebate is seperate) in about 4-5 months of usual driving around so the conversion has cost me nothing

Haha wont be long before they get ripped off during some real off roading. I had mine tucked up nicely by the exhaust shop and I still have dents in them.

I find the biggest limiting factor on my disco is tyre size. Its an extremely capable car but with everyone migrating to bigger tyres I'm starting to be left behind on what would otherwise be pretty easy tracks just because my diffs are bottoming out.

My plans for my disco are to at least get 33's (sourced a reasonable set for free by a mate who upgraded to 35's). Then see where to go from there. The car still has to take me fishing and camping so I want it liveable for a good 6-7 hour drive.

That is a 3" lift judging by the space in the arches, lose those paint tins hanging out the back and just leave as is for now and save for a winch, at least then you will be able to pull yourself out of the s.h.i.t you get yourself in.
