Interesting to see the vehicle developments and the "blend". Check out Shannon Campbells new KOH buggy.

Full fox kit
IFS.... you read correctly!
8 into 1 extractors.

Awesome bit of gear!
But you would have thought after last year he would have added a spare tyre carrier.

after having seen shannon drive a couple of times, I bet he could drive a long way on a flat tyre and still go fast if he wanted to. Most people would stop so as not to ruin a thousand dollar tyre, he would probably drive on the brake rotor if it gave enough traction!
Its going to be an awesome race. I don't think it is a one man race this year, there are alot of other very capable driver and rig combinations. Should make it very interesting.

It'll be interesting to see. So many of the cars were running so much unsprung weight in comparison to shannons buggy and with hydro they looked like they handled like a POS (sorry Adrian!). This thing should steer nicely but I wonder how it will overcome the inherent imbalance of IFS in the fast stuff - rear setup looks really controlled though. I guess in only has to be better than the others. I'd be interested to see how it goes in the rocks also with the IFS, though he did it without portals last time. I wonder if he looked into an IFS setup like what the Rangie uses that links both sides to get that downward push from the other side also. I hope he does well in it.

I don't think that he'll every carry a spare tyre. From what I've seen Shannon is an all or nothing driver and he builds to suit. He'll probably never have a codriver for the same reason. Light, small, low and fast.

so what is that front diff and what could I buy one for. Seeing that made me WANT IFS!!!

Cool.

What's the deal with the front shocks??? Are they 1 coilover and one air/gas shock? Is that so he can get the front end to behave nicel;y opn off camber stuff?

Front diff looks like a hi-9 in a custom housing???

Wouldn't surprise me - perhaps a flipped 9" with lots of Curry parts as its a rear engine.

I think the IFS will work fine.

I am pretty sure that he has worked out after last years race and the pre-runs, that the rock stages are not as technical and slow as what everyone made out.

It's pretty well a really small 4wd pre-runner set-up but with all the rock crawling bits (lockers, cutting brakes etc etc).

I suppose time will tell.

At the end of the day its small, has a sh!t load of power and very strong, plus one of the best all round drivers.

Look up Tracy Jordans new Bug being built by spider trax. Its more of an all round rig (as i believe he will be using it in Pro Mod next year), but it is also a very cool build and will be interesting to see how it goes in the hammers.

Just googling up on the Scat motors which Tracy is running. What a piece of work!

Chev with the middle 4 pistons cut out and rewelded together again amd then a supercharger bolted to the top. 480hp on gas.

another potential complication is that according to Pirate they had a few inches of snow out at the Hammers this week, which could make everything very interesting.

Bru there are at least 3 IFS rigs being built for KOH, shannons and a jimmys4x4 build both have heaps of details and pics on the pirate site. there are at least 2 threads of tech for shannons build. check them out!

What? most of the desert races, TT etc are IFS...

almost every buggie is IFS and IRS, every TT is IFS and solid rear...

IFS with IRS is balanced, IFS and rear axle has suspension at each end that reacts differently inteh rough which unbalances it. The axle has a lot more unsprung weight which is hard to tie down like IFS.

i understand what you are saying, but wouldnt that be the same as saying coil front leaf rear would behave badly...

like anything i guess, its only as good as the design, construction and set up. seems the TT do alright with IFS and solid rear... even V8 super cars go alright for dinosaurs

Some categories are constrained by rules. You can make any suspension design work, but some work better than others. The V8 supercars are converted back from IRS.

look up the terrible herbst land shark - IFS (driven) and live rear. One of the fastest at the time it was built. Another think is weight distribution is important (more so) imo. At finke the buggies sucked big time in the whoops, whereas the stadium trucks (maybe one tt too) nailed them.

One other thing to note too, is even the best class 1 rear ends are very, very old school in design having only 1 lower wishbone moving in a single plane. The boxed arms are simply massive and would weigh the same as 1/2 a live axle. I think the reason for this is the massive weight on the wishbones carrying an entire engine and heavy transmission (11.5"c&P 6 speed) and needs to be stronger than a lower / upper design would allow as far as weight goes.

cheers bru

There is still an advantage even if the wishbones weighes the same as an axle setup as the wishbone is less than 100% unsprung. The landshark looks like it has massive arms, which are probably also from having the suspension mounted in those locations - right in the best place to bend them! I agree though re weight distribution - and mass locations.
