yeah swap out the auto hubs for sierra/vitara ones. although some people still have trouble with the manual hubs....calling mud_muncher!
Jimnys are great for what they are. Being EFI they are reliable and you can do a mild lift and run 30" tyres or body lifts are easy too. Just don't do both, otherwise your COG gets too high and this happens...
You can drop in a sierra transfer and some low range transfer gears for better ratios with big tyres. Lockers are available as well. go nuts

oh yeah if you do go bigger tyres watch the cv joints they are a weak spot. rear brake shoes wear quickly and any shudder in your driveline around 50-70km/h will most likely indicate worn panhard rod bushes.
check the upper coil mounts for stress fractures and cracking...will indicate if vehicle has had a really hard time. all other things engine related as per any vehicle check need to be looked at.
I like driving the jimnys, they are a nice little 4by to drive after being in a bone shattering leaf sprung sierra!

Yeah you cant go to wrong with a jimny, i thrashed my old one, a few trips to ormeau, basically all i broke was a few shockies and a panhard rod, treat it well, buy a good one and you'll have a ball
