Outer Limits 4x4 Board

ok its come time to build a tray for my GU.
its not as simple as id like becuase i cant pull the canopy off what is already on my truck to check things. this is due to having lights and things all built into it and i need my car each day.
so i need to build it and then take a day to swap it over.

i have a couple of questions before i can do much more.
1) i plan on having the spare tyre under the tray and wanted to no if people just slide it ontop of the tank, or put something over the tank for it to sit on??
2) i plan on fitting 35x12.5" tyre under it so i need about 330mm of room in height but wen i measure it, it seems really hight for a tray.

any help of pics of how people have done this would be good. i will keep you all updated on how it comes alone.

Chriso, just get some 25x25 and make up a little cradle to suit a 35, you can borrow mine if you want.

Tray will be high, just raise the floor of the tray where the tyre will sit? Won't be a flt floor but hey.

i built my tray for my gu which is 2.2 metres long and i have a 35 underneath the tray , the tray does sit pretty high but so does my cab .

I made up 3 flat strap plates for the spare to sit and and ran them from the rear of the chassis to the chassis / shock bar , in a traingle sort of thing .

will get some pics for you tomorrow if you want .

Have you thought of having a trap door style hatch to access the spare? may make the tray a couple of inches lower.

Just remember if there is a 12.50" wide trye under the tray. Is it going to be high enough to make the tray useless?

my 35's and 4inch lift already do that. but having your spare 35 on the tray takes up to much room. in the end it will only be a few inches higher for alot extra cargo surface area.

i dont think having a trap door will make it much lower, and then also the hassle if you get a flat of pulling everything off the tray to get it.
i think it will be roughly 100-150mm max on how high it is now with the canopy on it... so should be able to incorerate a step into the frame.

doing some more work on it tonight hopfuly and going to try get it to mockup stage and on the car by the weekend. see how it goes

One other thing i forgot to mention is that i run my spare flat so its a little bit thinner and easier to fit in the gap .

Heres a few pics of the way i run my 35 under my tray on my gu ute , i am running 3 inch springs and 35s so you can see how high the tray sits in the side pic .
I run a rear door which hinges on the left side and a padlock on the right side and has the number plate mounted to it , i have a semi round piece of steel at the front of the spare to locate it, it all seems to work fine for me .

One thing i found is that i run a 15 x 10 inch rim , if your running 15 x 8 s you could probably go a bit lower if wanted as they are a bit narrower .

As i have also said i have a 2.2 metre tray , if yours was longer you could mount your spare further back and get the tray height lower also .

thanks for that, yeah pretty simple will do something like that. my tray is only 2m long so a but shoter than yours.

Let me know if you want me to bring a tyre round, going to mum and dads tomorrow so can come round and drop it off, and think of ideas with you

thats ok mate . i drive it everyday so if you want any other pics or measurements .
I think your tray will probably have to sit a bit higher than mine being only 2 metres long , you won't be able to get your spare as far back and low as mine , i wish my tray was that short but i made it to suit my slide on and keep it low at the same time .

see how you go with it , my rear fuel tank has also been spaced down a bit if it helps any .

i dnt see it should hit on anything... but i guess i will see if all my measurments work out wen i put it on lol
a pic of the car side on would be handy just to see how high it sits compaired to the cab.... mine should be about the key hole and my car has a 2' body lift

Depending on how you use it.....

you could drop your fuel tank 2 inches - - making the tyre + tray lower...

My mate had a tray built with under tray spare (35 x 12.5).
But his tray is nearly 2.4 m long.

His tray sat at a good height.

My fuel tank is dropped by about 30 - 40 mm ( which isn't too bad as my towbar sits lower ) , and my actual tray bed height is about 40 - 50 mm under my door lock height ( i have a 40 mm cab lift in at the moment )

i reckon if i had a 15 x 8 inch rim on my spare i could probably get that height down another 20 mm but my tyres would scrub pretty hard on the under side of the tray then when off road .
It only just scrubs now when flexing up .

found time to do a bit more work on the tray this weekend
added some more supports for the floor as well as where the lights are going to be mounted.
decided to do the same on the front of the tray so it looks uniform and covers the bottom of the cab some wat.
checked if a 35x12.5 tire would fit and it will, no need to change anything to the fuel tank, im actally able to weld in a bar at the chassis mount hight and the wheels still fits so makes like easy.

I like those LED's. Are you just going to mount your reverse lights on the sub frame near your spare/tow bar ?

Where abouts did you buy them from and how much for those round stop and indicator lights mate ?

Also dont forget about a number plate LED for night time to keep her all legal.

i got them from Bursons. but you can get them from most auto shops.. they are LED Autolamps and the only round ones that are ADR approved.
i paid 180ish for all 4 lights, 4 rubber grommets, 4 wiring plugs
the bloke sold them to me at cost price tho, not sure why ahaha but i didnt complainl. just ask around or look them up on the net they have a website so google them.

I have told you once and say it again, put a door type thing over the spare tyre that hinges down or up...

And how big is the box at the front? Jake was telling me it holds a heap of cans?

see how it looks on the car before i put the door thing.. can always put it on after its on the car just before it gets powered coated....

bar work for the tray







bolt on rear bar, wanted it incase i need to carry a length of something. Also might plan to get a canvas canopy of extented trips so thought id make it all match get it done at the same time

anyones thoughts???
