hey all, lookin for a cheap fourby for a daily driver/tourer/camping rig.
so far the discos are lookin pretty good to me as cruisers and patrols are 10 years older and the same price range. plus ide like something a little smaller for the misses to handle.

anyway ive spotted a couple of 94-95ish tdi auto jobs getting around. how are they power wise? will they sit on 100-110 easily? have enough power for overtaking at speed and getting off the lights? or should i just bight the bullet and go v8?

also is there any common faults etc with them? anything i should be wary of?

and yes i want an auto for the misses, and if all your gunna say is "get a manual" then you may aswell not reply coz it aint happenin! maybe in 12months or so we will upgrade to something with manual when she is more confident. but we need something for now!

cheers for any help!!

I have a 98tdi auto and I love it. I think you will find people say that the tdi is better with an auto anyway. Its not a speed machine but its not that slow either. You may struggle to overtake unless you can get a run up :) All Landrovers have there problems but so far mine have been easy fix things. Keep an eye out if the timing belt has been done, it has to be done every 80thousand. Good luck!

I also have a 98 tdi auto and love it, i dont find it sluggish at all and once over 60k it goes well, 75-85 is the only time i feel the lack of power as that is when the auto drops into 4th gear and the converter locks up. A mild injector pump tweak will make it boogie .

Yep.... test drive one. They're frugal, but also just plain slow and dont throw a hill at them. Tdi owners are the only ones that think that they are fast.

Its a bit hard not to pass a Patrol as they throw cement dust down and pick up expensive pieces of engine from under the car.

What is the difference in 0-100 times between the Nissan and Landy diesels?

its ok im not expecting a balls out big block like power monster lol.
how would they be on par with say a turbo hj60 cruiser? similar?
i just want something that can get out of its own road if you get what i mean...
i took a v8 disco for a drive today and i can say for a v8 i was a little underwhelmed! it was fine for what i want it for but thought they would have a bit more poke when i put my foot down! however i realised after that i had they air con on and maybe they drain a heap more power than other cars, i dont know, ive never had anything to do with any landrovers!

actually... are the diesel motors in the discos the same as they defenders? i have driven one of them before and that was ok for what i want (power wise)

Defenders had the 300TDI untill 98 or 99 i think then went with the TD5 untill the current ne with is a 2.7 ford engine.

300tdi's are very simple 1 wire fully mechanical engines easy to work on problem solve etc TD5 great engine, few simple mods like exhaust and bigger IC and chip can make these things fly! but lots of electrics. either way get what will do the job for you just go out and test drive
