Hi Does anyone know of a good brake up grade for a GQ its a 1992 ti, the brakes are pretty average really, any suggestions or mods would be helpful.
Does it have the EFI Twin piston calipers on front and big brakes?wabby wrote:Hi Does anyone know of a good brake up grade for a GQ its a 1992 ti, the brakes are pretty average really, any suggestions or mods would be helpful.
yea that does sound familiar bout the pads... and I'd have sold em too!mr_wonderful wrote:Bruce i believe they were being made at a place in heidleberg called TDK Engineering but are no longer in business or from what i have heard
my old boss had them on his and didnt think they stopped better than the standard GU brakes, so he called them up and they said he needed to get the 'better' pads for them at $440 a set and only lasting about 5-10,000 kms, he sold them off refusing to pay for pads
cheers
Personally I would have gone the slotted for fronts, but you can have std discs 'slotted'... not sure how much, but it can be done.RN wrote:I looked at purchasing front slotted rotors for my 93 Mav ( early single piston brakes) but for the same price of those I was able to purchase standard rotors for all four wheels. ( same brand )
Fitted new pads and as they haven't bedded in I am yet to see how much of an improvement they are. ( at least they have stopped squealing)
Slotted, twin pistons, perhaps even GU larger brakes but for everyday DD where do you stop.
( pun not included but will claim it )
I did inquire about slotted and of all the people canvassed I received various opinions. In the end available funds ruled the day.bogged wrote:Personally I would have gone the slotted for fronts, but you can have std discs 'slotted'... not sure how much, but it can be done.RN wrote:I looked at purchasing front slotted rotors for my 93 Mav ( early single piston brakes) but for the same price of those I was able to purchase standard rotors for all four wheels. based on that then the yeah go the slototed and cross drilled, also beed the system out and out fresh fluid though, you alsom may have a soft pad, get a heavyduty standard braking pad, soft pads may feel good on the firt brake but fade out, to hard will be crap until they get hot, also for a firmer feel try putting braided lines on and check your master cylinder, may need an overhaul or replaceingwabby wrote:Well got 16'' wheels 2 spot calipers I might try slotted/drilled rotors, see if that stops any better, I am trying to stop that fading feeling.
I went to get quote on drilled the other week, just while there... the bloke wouldnt sell me drilled. said they can expand and crack offroad if you do the hot brakes/cold water gig and the holes are the weak point.. he said slotted are all you require...Tiny wrote:based on that then the yeah go the slototed and cross drilled, also beed the system out and out fresh fluid though, you alsom may have a soft pad, get a heavyduty standard braking pad, soft pads may feel good on the firt brake but fade out, to hard will be crap until they get hot, also for a firmer feel try putting braided lines on and check your master cylinder, may need an overhaul or replaceingwabby wrote:Well got 16'' wheels 2 spot calipers I might try slotted/drilled rotors, see if that stops any better, I am trying to stop that fading feeling.
Im lookin for some braided lines for mine.. apparently they make a shit load of difference too...turps wrote:I am just putting a GU front in my GQ. Wish it was out of a 4.8 though, there supposed to have the best patrol brakes except for aftermarket.
GQ EFI bolt on, but you will need caliper, disk and pads. Might as well get braided lines.
The upgraded brakes that On Track had where supposed to be awseome. Could lock up a 35 all day.
Darren McRae has braided lines sorted. 03 5221 1372bogged wrote:Im lookin for some braided lines for mine.. apparently they make a shit load of difference too...turps wrote:I am just putting a GU front in my GQ. yes and no, and it depends on what kind of work you do with your 4b, I have also heard of small rocks hetting lodged in and cutting grooves into padsbogged wrote:I went to get quote on drilled the other week, just while there... the bloke wouldnt sell me drilled. said they can expand and crack offroad if you do the hot brakes/cold water gig and the holes are the weak point.. he said slotted are all you require...Tiny wrote:based on that then the yeah go the slototed and cross drilled, also beed the system out and out fresh fluid though, you alsom may have a soft pad, get a heavyduty standard braking pad, soft pads may feel good on the firt brake but fade out, to hard will be crap until they get hot, also for a firmer feel try putting braided lines on and check your master cylinder, may need an overhaul or replaceingwabby wrote:Well got 16'' wheels 2 spot calipers I might try slotted/drilled rotors, see if that stops any better, I am trying to stop that fading feeling.

either way its very hard to answer a generic question whan people fail to add all the variables
True, I still have picture of Rolys face sittin in the Troopys passengers seat as he embarked back down some bitchy steep hill to recover little roly...LOCKEE wrote:Bruce, at least you know how Darren's car gets treated and his customers.
