I'm asking people's oppinions. i like going into mud, like a good climb and i'm not too worried about the price of the tyres. i have a sierra ute. have 31's on it at the moment, but they're getting low, and they'r buckshots.

what made you arrive at these two tyres? do you do much road driving to get to the mud? is it just mud or do you also have to cross some rocks etc between mud holes?

yea i do drive it on the road as well. and yea i do have to drive over rock etc. i haven't arrived at those 2 tyres, just ones i was considering. i thought the centipedes seemed quite good as theyr quite a soft compound?

I reckon the Silverstone 'pede copies have a little bit too much void to be a multipurpose tyre. They would own mud though.

My vote's for Swampers. I've been using swampers offroad since 1991 and I'm yet to see see anything I'd rather run.

How do they cope with side force, as in not sliding off wet stuff. They look like they would be second to nun at moving ford, just the patten dont look to have much for the slide force? i run Bf's atm for an all rounder

Swompers or silvertsones.

The new 35x10.5 boggers may be worth a look. if you want someething that tall. or would you prefer to stay smaller ???

I don't have any complaints at all. I can't see how they have less lateral grip than a 'pede/silverstone knockoff.

Unless you have a sense of humor, I don't think I'd go for boggers. They're cool and all, bt I think you'll get more general purpose drivability out of a "normal" swamper.

Very true, but not many others are running that size (or type for that matter ) so you get bragging rights.

Most people have been very happy with the Mickey Thompson MTZ, you may find this to be an ideal compromize as an on road/off road mud/rock tyre.

i just got maxxis trepadors, had a set of 35's on the old runner and they were unreal! just got a set in 31 for the zook, grip to anything but on sideways in the mud they slip a little, also the side biters are good!

if you play in rock or any hard surface you will find the lugs on the bighorn's to chew out ... from what I've seen

all depends what you want to do. if you just want to fit the tyres and leave them for on and off road use than be very picky about what you get as it will have to have good on road manners and braking ability. if you just want an off road tyre the choice is endless. there are two tyres i wouldn't go near ever again, and i say this because i have owned sets of them, they are swampers and simex centipede or jt's. not impressed with them offroad, and absolutely shitefull on road. and so you know, i'm not a big fan of the silverstone extreme either ( its MT117 SPORT for me ), but would choose it over those other two anyday.

Joe, do your 285s measure reasonably true to the claimed measurement (840mm) or are they like the other silverstones that are well known to measure short?

i haven't had or seen a silverstone that measured bad, and yes mine are all good ( two sets sitting here) but they did have a problem which the manufacturer addressed, but this was not related to the sport.

I cant find too much wrong with my Pede's. At 5-6 psi they are awsome in the mud, pretty good on rocks as well but I dont drive it on the road.

How many sets of swampers have you owned Joe? From memory, you had a flogged set of 33 12.5's... hardly a suitable tyre for a sierra even before they were worn out by someone else before you got them.

12.5" tyres are about 3" too wide for a sierra. 10.5's are the useful limit for a tyre that sees any sort of mud on a sierra from what I've seen/driven.

don't forget the 32 x 9.5 x 16's.....horrible tyres......

I have the 31s bighorns they seem fine just depends on how hardcore you go i wouldn't go the simex if its a road car but for play they will beat the bighorn in mud no doubt.

Unless you are talking about the simex mud tyre also called centipede that has like a BFG pattern? i ran them a few years ago and didn't like them they are soft but on road they did vibrate a lot a diff speeds and when coming to a stop eg braking it seem'd weird in the way it would react and the tyres were balanced well. Maybe just a bad set.

Well I've voted for the simex ET pedes cause that's what I daily drive on. I also used to run buckshots which I was impressed with for their price, but I love my pedes. In regards to on road manners, I drive a sierra with a gti motor, reduced gears and a lockright rear evry single day for months it has been my only car. Recently we had 40+ days of constant rain and flooding, and I had not a single drama on road in those trying conditions in my zook, I would go as far as to say they handled (in 31X10.5, possibly in part to the extra width) just as good as my stocko all terrains did on road in the wet. The only downside I have is some bump steer which is moreso due to the width and wheel offset. They are wearing quite well, better than my buckshots did. And in the mud I cannot fault them although don't air down too much in mud as they can get crap in the bead due to their design. On rocks sure they aren't as good as a soft compound, silverstone or swamper but they are still a league above a normal radial type muddy or the like and I'd like to see people with swampers or silverstones have a set last as long as a pede.

Really though it's up to you to decide, if I could I'd have a set of competition style maxxis treps on my zook in a instant but they don't make them in zook sizes. Other than that I would like to try a swamper but not on road.

thanks heaps guys, a lot of different points, a lot of different suggestions. Its made me aware of even more tyres out there so its making it even harder to decide.

I have these things for my daily tyres. Very soft flexible sidewalls that suit the light car very well. Grip quite well on road, however are addicted to following every hump/hollow, and crease on the bitumen. A little noisy, but no worse than a certain set of Pirelli Highway tyres. Offroad performance will outstrip any set of "all terrains", but they are pretty hopeless in mud, and are less than pefect in soft river soil like terrain. They are a very livable tyre, but Im not buying another set to replace them; I have contacted a tyre manufacturer and am holding out on something not yet released in Australia (due out mid april we hope).

If you are talking about the ET "centipede" pattern, I have the ripoff Silverstone for my offroad set. In comparison to the above tyre:
firm sidewalls that require very low pressures offroad. Onroad grip is yet to be an issue for me, even in the wet; unlike the Sime MT they do no follow road shape too much, and actually track on road quite well (having too a low a pressure on road is bad though). They are incredibly noisy (sound like a train but 10x worse) and I could never stand them for daily use. Offroad performance I have found pretty good; they are a little "interesting" on loose gravel roads, and on really slippery mud thats not deep but just over the surface, they are a bit scarry (not sure anything would have done too well in this case though, I couldn't walk over it). Also they wear down at a bit of a rate, and murder the cars fuel economy. Not sure what I'd replace them with, but mine have plenty of tread left, so Im not really thinking of that at the moment.

Have fun deciding mate. I did about 2 weeks solid research in January on what Im going to buy for my next road set (radial MTs), and shortlisted my top 3 preferences. Its a nightmarish decision, and I still have minor doubts! But I have about 2-3 more months to think before I actually go through with buying them.
