FJ40 wont run on gas

Hi my FJ40 will no longer start on gas, it does however run on petrol fine. The solonoid is allowing the gas into the converter but i dont know how the converter works?
I have read that gas does not go stale, the properties only seperate if left long enough, so i have shaken the tank so that it is as mixed as it could be if this is truly the case.

If anyone has any ideas of what i could do i would appreciate it.

checked the coolant lines to the converter? they have sensors so if water temp gets too hot or no water it will cut out the gas.

pull the convertor apart and check the seals and the metal on the houseing. quite often the housings become pitted on the machined face's

we had the same problem it wouldn't start on gas when it was cold. it turned out that i had to ajust the mixture.

its your gas mixture

start it with start ya bastard down a vacume line and then adjust the mixture so it idles perfectly, it will be close enough to stary easily

it seems funny how when replying nobody asks the obvious questian

what sort of gas system do you have?

if you hold the revs up and flick it over does it run on gas?
if it runs on gas at revs but not idle then its an idle mixture problem.
leaking gas can be dangerous so take it to an expert and get it tuned properly while your there. imho

It will not run on gas even if i try to change over at higher rpm (around 2000)

It has impco stamped under the air cleaner where the hose from the converter goes into, there looks to be a manual valve which has a dimple, on one side it has R and the other L, it seems logical enough that this is rich or lean, but the valve is open on rich flat out????????

The system also has a vacuum line coming from under the carby, which goes to a vacuum switch which is in series with the solonoid, the vac switch seems to be working as i have gas going into the converter.

I have not changed anything since i bought it 3 years ago and it has run fine untill one day after not starting it for a month, it would not start

do you run the carby out of petrol before you switch over?

when the poster writes " will not START on gas", thats whats you assume, it does not matter 2 bits what sort of gas system he has if the mixtures are so bad it does not start.

well if it dont start OR run on gas then you have to doublecheck that gas is indeed going to the converter AND that the safety cutout is functioning when the engine is running.
pull the feed line from the converter to the mixer and see if you can hear/feel the gas coming when you first flik it to gas ( should go for a few seconds and then teh safety cutout wil cut the gas)

if you dont have gas then check the solenoid on the tank and the mixer for clicking ( make sutre the valve on the tank is OPEN aswell :) )

if you have gas good
then check that the safety cutout is wired correctly and working

a wire from the safety cutout must go to the negative post on your coil OR be wound around your coil lead. this wire is so that the safety cutout knows your engine is running and keeps the gas flowing, if there is no pulse down this wire the gas flow will stop.

to check the cutout, have someone turn the engine over while you run a multimeter on the + output of the cutout, it should be energised for as long as you are cranking the car over.
most cutouts have a red light also, if yours does, just see if it stays on while you are cranking.

have a look and report back when you are done.
