Outer Limits 4x4 Board

G'day all,

Well after 5 weeks and much $$ my RR is back on the road, sporting a rebuilt R380, Maxi drive 4.1's fitted in disco carriers and rebuilt hubs (front and rear) and 255/85 R16 BFG Mud Terrains. All done in my spare time in my driveway

tyres fit with no body lift, but they will rub when 4wding so I need to trim or body lift (haven't decided yet)

BUT I have a problem, My gearbox was making a ticking noise before thats why I pulled it out (and it had brass in the oil and front input had heaps of free play)

What parts of the gearbox turn when in neutral? the input, lay shaft, is that it ?? As the same noise is apartent in the new box, when foot is on the clutch the noise goes away, I'm trying to work out if it's the transfercase making the noise as there is abit of a clunk when taking off (and changing gears)

If it's not the transfercase then the box isn't right and that means I have to get warranty and out it comes again :(

Das what bearings did you replace? Could be the thrust bearing, i think thats what it's called.

Sounds like thrust bearing to me too. I replaced one last year after it totally collapsed and I had no clutch!
It was making a slight grinding noise when the clutch was out and the box in neutral, when you put the clutch in, the noise went away.

Unfortuantely, I think I got more mud in the new one last weekend and it's making the same noise again!

Tell me you replaced the thrust bearing and spigot bearing while you had the box out.

replaced rear main oil seal, spigot bearing, machined flywheel, new clutch plate and pressure plate, new thrust bearing.

I knew that but had to ask.

If its in neutral with the clutch in , stationary then nothing should be moving in the transfer .

Was talking to a mate today who is a mechanic and he knows abit about full time 4wd's, I got him to listern to the noise, he belives it is the gearbox putting abit of the idle power into the TC and the TC gears are making a tap tap noise as they move just the slightest due to the small amount of slop in the TC gears

This sounds possible, and would explain why the noise is the exact same as before all the work was done. The noise isn't loud, and you can't hear it when you rev the motor up, only at idle.

I don't really want to pull the TC out, I will wait till the noise starts to get louder, if it does I will go to the people I got the gearbox off and see what they think.
