I helped with this conversion on a mates Hilux using a V6 out of a VN commodore.

We had problems with overheating as well because the rear mounted thermostat caused problems with piping it to the top rad outlet and a dodgy engine harness from the previous owner meant it was running lean on the left bank of cylinders. We did a swap with the series 2 manifold and got a rad hose kit from Marks 4WD and a brand spanking new wiring loom.

Fixed the problem up.

We also had problems with the gearbox fliud overheating and cooking 3rd and 4th drive clutches. We rebuilt the gearbox with what we were told was v8 interals. Apparantly the V8's have same gearbox housing but slightly beefer internals.

Hope that helps

Hey Pom, I have a 3 core out of a ln106 diesel with a $100 buck thermo fan from autocheap with an ajustable thermo switch. Never had a heating problem with it.

Before this setup I had Marks 4wd addaptors fixed fan that worked fine aswell. (never overheated). I still have the fixed fan and hub, Pm me if you want to buy it and will give you a price for it

make sure the radiator can is located higher than the motor so you don't get air lock in the cooling system, it happens all the time.

so how can i stop air locks because i think thats a very big problem too....
i cant mount the radiator any higher then what its set at!

ive got a commo rad in it now with 2 thermos and it does get v hot but one time i took it out and had no dramas all day untill the thermo switch broke and it heated up so maybe i might have a decent air lock?

by radiator can do you mean the overflow bottle ?
My radiator had to be mounted low because of some odd mods and iam yet to take it on a big test run. Is there a bleed valve to let the air out like the VL commodores have or will i have to rig something up.

Hey Pom, i'm using a 3 core out of a diesel hilux with modified pipes and two 10 inch thermos, I used to run a vp motor and alot of mud runs, never had a heating problem. Now i run a vs ecotec motor and still no prblems. There should be a bleed valve on your thermostat housing but if your radiator sits higher than your motor it doesn't always work. There is a way to do it, it's not pretty but it works. Get a 2 litre soft drink bottle and cut the bottom inch or so of it, then get a roll of electrical tape and roll it around the thread on the bottle untill you can squeze it in the top of your radiator, and then proceed to fill it up keeping the water level above the top of the motor. When full and no air bubbles it gets messy, quickly rip the bottle out and replace the radiator cap.
Good luck, Brad

sounds good but i got told by marks adapter i need a lux radiator like yours and a engine fan so i need the kit but ive got no room as i made the motor sit in with the dual cases( hard to explain)

so now i have a el radiator with the standard smicko looking fans and im going to put it on the tray but the next question is will the stock water pump push the water as im soooooooooooooo out of coin and 4 weeks left and im going in :x (i hope  )

I also have a VR and standard hilux radiator, the only problem i ever had was when the old commadore thermo fan motor shorted out and popped the fuse when I was out collecting firewood. Got back in the car and the engine temp redlined. I now run a high flow thermostat, 2x 10 inch thermos with no shroud and have jacked up the rear of the bonnet, to get airflow through the engine bay as the V6 blocks cooling air going out the bottom. With all this done the engine temp never gets above half way on the gage, and there is a noticeable change in engine bay temp when stopped, or slow 4wdriving. I hope this has helped. Regrads, Stirlo.

Are you using the toyota temp sender? The gauge wont read properly if you dont. I used a marks fixed fan in mine that sorted out all the problems but realy noisy. The commo engine managment switches the fans on at about 100 degrees & off at about 95degrees. wich is why coolent in these is very important. Mine would run at the high part of the gauge but wouldnt boil I use temp probe in the cooling system & it wasnt going over 100. I think the origanal toyota gauge was calibrated differantly for a system that runs 85 to 90 degrees. I was going to go back to the 16inch thermo but sold the conversion.
