Rear diff noise??

Rear diff has a whine, loud one at speed, stops when I back off the accelerater, was picked up on the road worthy. I didn't really notice it till it was pointed out as it sounds the same as driving a unimog from work. Have followed some advice and added about 500ml of morreys to it but noise is still there.

My question is, is the noise a problem in itself or a sympyom of something else? ie pinion preload or worn ring and pinion,

I had the same noise with my front diff. Wasn't sure till the front driveshaft was removed, but it sounded exactly like you mentioned.
Turns out it was the ring and pinion. I put up with the whine until I blew my 2nd rear diff and then replaced both sets with 4.1's!
Good excuse to re-gear!

So if I pull out the rear diff is there any visuall indications that I should be looking for.

Pulled the rear diff, looked at it for a half hour had no idea what I was looking for :D But everything looked fine, the ring and pinion have almost zero wear on them, just faint marks, this normal, I wouldn't know its my first time  pulling out a diff that is.

It is probably the bearing on the pinion. See if you can find someone to fix it for you. Looks like you will be driving a 2wd rangie for a little while

Looks like it, spoke with the mechanic I've been going through he's looking at it friday for me. Sme thing, told him what I had done and he said bearings, unfotunately I'm not ready to pull a diff down and rebuild it yet, but the time will come.
