Outer Limits 4x4 Board

The bush on my gearbox shifter (the one that sits above the 'ball') has disintegrated, so the stick has a fair bit of up and down play.

I tried to order a new bush through local suzuki dealer but apparently they only sell it as one part complete with the shifter. Does this sound right? I didnt enquire about a new complete shifter price. (i also ordered a new output seal, $11.50)

How have people got around this? Is there a bush below the ball?

Also, for the information of other forum members, it really does pay to shop around at wreckers! The quotes i got from different wreckers were $400, $400, $440, $660, $675 + my old box trade in!, AND $250!

I bought the $250 one, from a place where you remove your own parts.
This new box actually feels as good as a brand new box. BUT needs a new bush.

suzuispares.com do a full reco gearbox for $595 exchange for yours.Seems like you got a pretty good price in the end anyway.Ive been looking for one of late too.

How do you fit them? It's always looked to me like the upper bush and retaining plate was fitted before the gearlever was pressed/vulcanised on. I can't see an obvious way of replacing it without damage.

A urethane one might have enough give to slip over the ball I guess?

X2, I just put another gearlever with a good bush in mine. (lucky I had one lying around).

You need to remove the gear knob and slip it on that way.

Knob or lever?

The retaining plate with the three holes in it won't clear the lever AFAIK and that's between the bush and the lever

Sorry, not nit picking - there is a need for this part, I just can't get in my head how it can be replaced.

Yep, I hope I didn't appear that dumb in my above post

OK I just went and had a look at my old lever which sadly has no bush left. Refer to my diagram below. part 19 is rubber and can be stretched over the lever, though it is slightly painful. part 14 clears lever. part 21 clears lever by the smallest of margins. But when I remember looking at the lever that is now in my car, I thought the hole on the actual bush was too small... (ie just cleared the narrow neck above the ball. Oh well, my mistake.

WRT the orginal post by mike_nofx, the below diagram is from a Suzuki parts catalogue. It does not list a part number for that bush, which confirms the bad response from your Zuk dealer.

Like you, I wasn't aware that part 14 cleared the lever, but the fact the bush doesn't have a number confirms to me that it isn't considered replaceable.

However, knowing that part 14 is replaceable confirms that Bruce's urethane replacement can be fitted.

No worries guys, It's not hard to replace. Remember to put the gear stick in neutral so when replacing the stick it slips straight back in. I learn't the hard way and took a while to get it back in.

this helps with shifter slop.

There's also 2 sizes of bolt #12 and they have correspondingly different width slots in the ball on the lever.

Make sure the bolt is in good nick, the slot is in good nick, and you have the right size bolt and slot.

And don't cross thread it. There are soooo many ways this could all go wrong from here .... MUST RESIST ...

and dont drop the bolt into the box, you might never get it out.
