Guys I have a friend that has killed a 1998 GU RD28T engine.
If I but another second hand engine is there anything to lookout for with differences between models etc.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Prolly not what you want to hear but IHMO, I wouldn't look for the RD28T as a replacement. For the money, you can do heaps better on a different alternative.

There is a pretty recent thread pretty on patrol4x4.com about this very subject, worth reading.

Not sure of your location, but Ron Hall 4x4 Salvage in Melbourne will probably have one and can probably offer advice on different replacements. Just google it.

Not sure what freight would be to Karatha though.

Not stressed about the cost of the freight I know the RD28 is not the greatest.
This is a single mum with a blown engine (cracked pistons I suspect)
just needs to get it running she would be happy with a running RD28 at the moment.
The mob that have the car are trying to charge her $14000 for a new/second hand engine with 3 months warranty.
I suspect I could buy another RD28 for $3000 and replace it for next to nothing.

Christ, you could buy a whole new GU with 2.8 in it for that.

Complete rebuilds are around $10k on your engine.. several threads on www.patrol4x4.com forum on this.

I'd say $3 - $3.5k would be about right for a 2nd hand engine.
