Best Motor+Gearbox+Tranfer for 4WD

hi, i have an overlander and am getting sick of its mechanicals so i am dreaming of some alternatives. my biggest hate of it is the carby on the small block chev makes it flood, so im thinking i need a fuel injected motor, and i love the holden 5L so i am thinking of going that (plus i have a supercharged one in a commo so i have spare parts and knowledge on it already). so what gearbox + transfer combo do you think is the best?

im thinking a manual is the way to go, so it would probably be easiest to get a matching gearbox and transfer and then just the bellhousing -> motor is the only thing required. if i was to go auto (turbo 700 would be the go here as its the stock commo one), what are some easy transfer cases to add? i've heard of the 60series getting used a fair bit in this sort of scenario.

what box and transfer are in it already?? an inj 5L might just bolt up.

why not just put fuel injection on the chev????

I would have to say I think an auto is a better option than a manual if we are just talking "best combo for a 4WD."

dyna box and transfer, stronger than cruiser i believe.

think they are toy adapters out there, not 100% on this one.

Atlas or Stak tcase behind a worked 6spd auto would rate highly on my "best" list. How much money do you have to burn?

Or save time and money by putting it on LPG, no more off road flooding issues, little Kev is still giving out a rebate as well.

Why not go LPG for fuel?? Wont "run out" on you when your going up steep hills or doing backflips.

Yeah dual fuel would be an easy option. I would never recommend straight gas to anyone, personally.

LPG is for BBQs and forklifts IMHO, rebate or not. Had it and I never have it again. an EFI 5L would be the way to go for sure, unless you wanted to put an LS1 in it.

Jacked - I was pretty sure overlanders didn't use trimatics and the linked article (http://www.outerlimits4x4.com/ftopic159763.php) specifies a T400. The ratios specified in the text also bear this out.

I've been in a 4WD converted pano with a trimatic in it but it wasn't an overlander. I think that yanucelli's 4WD in QLD were the only people who ever messed with trimatic adapters until suzuki put the trimatic in a vitara.

A reliably built T700R4 would be the best offroad gearbox for your application.

There's nothing inherently wrong with a D20 transfer case - they were used behind 8's in early broncos and jeeps, but I agree that an atlas/T700 combo would be cool, but overkill for a car that's not being used for extreme conditions. An NP205 would suck the big one. they're 185lb of cast iron and have a 1.96:1 low range. All that strength wold be a waste in a light duty vehicle like an overlander.

Just some thoughts.

lpg, never even contemplated it. the chev (307) has not won me over which is why i just want to get rid of it.

current gearbox, i am still not sure what it is, some gm 5speed. its not the greatest though, crunching second etc. this is why i thought to just get rid of it. i am thinking it might be a jeep gearbox, i think the model may be AB15, something similar? it might also be a T5, havent looked at that yet, it just slipped into my mind the other day. its not a getrag (from commos).

current transfer i think its the dana20, but i tried doing some beach work in it the other week (which really pissed me off how crap the carb is), was trying hi/lo to see if i could get around easier, it really wasnt changing well, I was never sure which gear it was in etc.

all these points combined are why i am looking at my options to replace the lot with good, 'compatible' units.

anyone know what is involved in putting a holden v8 in instead of the chev v8 in the old kingswoods, i am talking in regards to cross members / engine mounts (pumps and electrics etc i am aware of what is required). im thinking the chev would be the 'turbo' style bolt pattern, which is what the 304 and some 253/308 are. so i could probably just bolt a 304 up to the current 5speed, depending if the clutch/shaft etc are compatible.

PS- my understanding is the original overlanders were T400 (ie turbo pattern motors). trimatic is the aussie bolt pattern motors.
PPS- i have never been told properly about the 2 bolt patterns, this is just what my lots of reading forums+mags has lead me to believe.
