1hz intercooler

just wondering wat intercoolers people run on their 1hz turbo motors as im thinking of retro fitting one in the next few weeks to my 75 ute
im also going to raze the boost once the inter cooler is done

Depending on your budget any of the 3 common ones seem to be fitted.

Top mount, need to cut hole in bonnet and fit scoop, but is easier and has less turbo lag due to shorter pipe lengths, may suffer from heat soak due to position on top of the engine.

Front mount, longer piping runs required, may have limited space for piping in engine bay and behind grill. Doesnt suffer from heat soak. May load up the cooling system due to restricting airflow to radiator and increasing air temp of air that reaches the radiator.

Water cooled, very efficient even at low speed, wont load up the existing cooling system with extra heat. More complexity with added reservoirs, radiator, water pump and switches, wireing and hoses etc.

The choice is yours any of them are better than not haveing one.

Dont go over 9 psi on a 1HZ the pre-combustion chambers in the heads dont like it, and the pistons arent built for high boost.
High boost=short life , lower boost= longer life.

Running a front mount on my 80 - piping can bet ricky to remove tight turns...

Running 13Psi with the intercooler and not getting over 550C on the pyro... Pre combustion chambers are a PITA..

Makes a difference on warmer days. Its a VL turbo type - 600MM x 400MM x 75MM with 3" in/out. Admitidely it'ss an ebay cheapo - but it works!

its a factory turbo motor out of an 80 series sahara and its alredy pumping out10 psi with a supriseingly low 400 egt

i was thinking a subaru waterv to air or a air to air top mount and put a fan under it to suck the air through

Get a front mount, up the boost by using a boost controller to 14 and turn up the fuel. If you want to run subaru, do the water cooler and a rad up front to cool it down.
Im playing with mine at the moment, and am running 15 psi at the motor,(hdft) egt is 610 pre turbo with an extra 1/4 turn on max volume screw. Managed 100km/hr at top of mount victoria yesterday.

the problem is i have no room in the front with the air con and trans cooler for the auto

If it is a factory turbo then it is a 1HD-T (or FT if post 95).

These motors can take 30psi and are direct injection, not precom. You might want to check what it is.

1HZ and 1HD-T look basically the same, but injectors are in a different loaction, injector lines are thicker on DT.

Even a 1HZ with good exhaust, good flowing turbo and low backpressure exhaust are happy at 14psi, providing egt in manifold are low, because there lies the killer, EGT's.

I have personally used the same intercooler mentionedby another poster on my 80 Sahara. I ran up to 27psi with modded turbo, but usually 20-22psi. EGT never over 1200F (650c) but I would run precom engine not more than 600 deg.

These intercoolers fit (at least in an 80) really well. I measured backpressure, not more tha 0.5psi - ie I couldnt measure it.

remember with precom engines, the 10% efficiency loss compared to DI all goes as heat into the head, so 1HZ making the same RWHP as 1HD-T needs a much bigger radiator - this is why so often they get hot when boosted and fueld up.

I should also say that I towed a caravan with this setup around Australia finishing Feb last year. 32000km. I sold the immaculate 80 to an Uncle who has it still, runs the same.

When I say never mroe than 650deg C, that is pre turbo, up very long hill at 2500rpm and 25psi boost, 32psi exhaust backpressure - I tried to measure as much as I could.

It is an auto, so has smaller exhaust housing for early boost, but chokes flow at high rpm. I made 114kW @ all 4 wheels with 33" A/T Tyres and about 500nm Torque. 80% torque by 1600rpm, 100% by 1800rpm

Turbo had bigger comp wheel and ceramic turbine (just for fun) - had a theory that they blow in petrols because of high EGT's and that they would be OK in diesel - guess what; I was right. Never saw more than 30psi though, really no point and in any case, my intercooler plumbing leaked after 22psi!
