G'day.

There are a number of posts on the Jeep forums regarding Jeeps catch fire.
Is this true?

What models in the Jeep range do this.
i.e Wrangler TJ, JK etc

I have heard the automatic gear boxes leak oil an therefore can catch fire.
What is there to look out for?
What causes them to catch fire?

Or is this a myth or is this just happened to a small number?
I am just about to purchase a JK Wrangler Rubicon (Manual).

Straight up no..

Yes some have .. but then again so have many other 4bys.

I've seen the remains of a TJ that burnt out on Fraser Island.. but that was a fuel rail that let go .. and it was a rental so gods knows what turkeys had been doing to it.

Saying that .. I've a 2000 Wrangler TJ .. and it's not caught fire..

I'll point out that I carry 2 extinguishers .. as I watched a mates wide body bronco burn .. and it wasn't nice .. I think EVERYONE should have one.

There was a recall on auto's to do with the transmission catching fire.

I've gone for the 6 speed manual, so touch wood the 2009 models do not have the same problem.

I had a recall on that back in 2002/2003 to fit a heat shield around the manifold. I also had a recall on the ignition.

It's still not burnt

Recall or not, the JK automatics are FLAWED in their design. The automatic dipstick is situated directly above the exhaust manifold in both the V6 and turbo diesel engines. There is NO metal locking clip on the cap. It relies on rubber friction to keep it in place.

Easily fixed but apparently its a jeep thing.

Most autos I've ever seen have a dipstick with a metal clip which makes it much harder for it to just pop off when under a bit of pressure.

Even the KJ Cherokee has a metal clip.

Why its not on the JK...who knows. i reckon afterthought. So yep, must be a jeep thing.

come on now today tonight are not like that

i been dealing with Jeeps for about 5-6 years and have NEVER seen any jeep catch fire, never met anyone who has seen one catch fire......


i think its more mis-informed people jeep bashing!!!!

My Jeeps colour is called "Amber Fire" so technically it is on fire...

no but ive thought about burning mine a few times

i dont own a jeep but quite a few friends own them, they all carry fire ext. just in case they catch on fire, none of them have ever actually caught on fire but if it did well... let it burn and let the insurance company deal with it...

it must be a jeep thing.

All 4WD owners who go offroad should carry a fire extinguisher, long grass around a hot exhaust can easily cause a fire, I'd say you're not fully prepared if you don't have a fire extinguisher, Jeep owner or not.
