Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Hi fellas.

The GQ/Chev i have bought has a large hole cut into the botton of the bellhousing, courtesy of the privious owner, Big enough to fit your hand in and hold the thrust bearing, i spoke to Marks Adaptor today and they are as confused as i am to why anyone would have done it.

I want to cover it up so mud doesnot shag the clutch.
It is a odd shape and profile to try and make a cover that can be fixed with metal treads.

Can the cast iron bell housing be welded with a plate filling the hole.

You can weld cast iron but a bellhousing is subject to a lot of forces that will probably crack the patch piece out.
Buggered if I know why anyone would cut a hole in a bellhousing.
Four tapped holes and a piece of tin should seal it up adequately, maybe add a bead of silicone.

Yeah I was going to say some of that aluminium flashing you can get for roofs.

What a bizarre place to cut a hole. Would have been a bit of work too.

ps don't reach into the hole and grab the thrust bearing while the engine is running!

maybe they had trouble lining up the input shaft and thought of a really bad way of lining it up

i will post a pic tommorrow, it has to be seen to be belived

If it's a marks bell housing it would be cast alloy, not cast iron. wouldn't it?

No.
It is the nissan original housing that it been cut , marks kit is just a small spacer housing only about 70mm thick.

put some flashing LED's in there with a perspex cover... all the cool kids are doing it.

are you sure its a cut hole, maybe a tidied up hole from something smashing it?`

GQ Bellhousings are common.

Replace it and a new clutch boot also.

Need reliability not a patch up.

We had to patch up a hole some stooge cut into my brothers VS SS bellhousing (angle grinder!). We got some alloy chequerplate, cut it about 5-10mm oversize, shaped it, then attatched it using some oil resistant silicone and four self drilling screws.

Passed RW inspection at a super fussy dealership no problems.

Most likely not, however i dont recall saying that it did......

I think our patch up job would have been more than effective on a 4x4 (i would do the same thing on my car if i had to). We could have welded the plate on too if needed, to make it a bit more permanent - although i dont think it was going anywhere to start with.

stock belhousings aren't exacly watertight anyway.....

piece of plate aly, tap m6-8 holes in corners, silicone, done.

this is why im gong to pressurize my bell housing

This is true actually, a stock GQ bellhousing seems to get pretty mud-logged pretty fast in my experience.

probably better to leave it as a drain hole

i have drilled bell houseings as a clutch "prolonger" for very bad leaking rear mains, i think bogged is right as a tidy-up for a hole that was smashed through.

just patch it with half a tinny and silastic, put some quick steel over the top if you picky.

This hole is no tidy up, from no accident, Some stupid mother f@#ker has cut this in, you could drain the yarra river through it!

That's the latest in air cooling technology!

have seen a few holes cut into bell housings at comps to adjust clutches or fix clutches. Dont know what is in thereto adjust though.

as he said but the throw out can be adjusted on the marks kit
obviously the previous owner didnt read the instructions or know
how to set the throwout height corectly fitted the motor fired it up
and no clutch,couldnt be arsed pulling motor so his mates said just cut a hole and its all good

If the person that cut the hole in the box is a stupid mother f@#ker what r u for then bying the dam thing off him u must be 1 to for not looking at it.

Every thing is done for r reason like ludacris said i have seen some of the comp guys doing it at races i think some one done it at xi 06.

I new it was there, at no stage was i not going to buy it because of the hole in the bell housing, just find it a bizaar thing to have done.
The car was a steel for the price and everything about the conversion was spot on.
Would have bought it with no gearbox and i would have pushed it home

No big deal, not very long ago it was standard practice to have a removable cover on the lower section of the bell housing.....
Like whats been said above, just make a neat cover.
Might well be a handy hole to have one day.
