ENGINE CHECK LIGHT and Loss of power HELP

Hey guys just bought a 1991 NH GLS SWB pajero 3.0L v6 and have noticed a few times now when i accellerate it looses all power and the engine check light flashes on then power restores and light goes off? Any ideas?
Previous owner replaced the exhaust last year some time and in reading manual it says ENGINE CHECK light on means issues with emission system?
Has anyone had this happen and how do i fix it?
