Hi guys, i have a '90 f300 and am going to weld the front diff. Have read up on it as much as possible, but still not clear on a few things.
This is probably a stupid question but if i pull the centre out to weld it up, what kind of adjustments (eg backlash etc) have to be checked when i'm putting it all back together? or is it a simple bolt back in procedure? I have downloaded the manual and printed it out, but just thought i'd get some idea of how much time to buget for putting it all back together? any other tips or pitfalls would be appreciated also. :?

From memory ( thankfully its been awhile since I did a front diff... ) you can get to the spider gears simply by removing the diff housing front cover plate.

So its "possible" (???? ) that it could be welded without actually disassembling the diff.

You would be advised to remove the housing form the vehicle to get all the oil off the gears before welding.... but with enough washing out might be do-able in car. Make certain the parts you want to move again don't get weld spatter on them....

The diff will need to be set up again if you pull it apart - most people mark the adjusters and count the turns to get them back in the same position on assembly as when disassembled. Its not as good as a professional job - but its a front diff after all and most of the time its disconnected so its less critical.

Could be dreaming... but its dead simple to pull the front coverplate off to see - so at worst my "cunning plan" could waste an hour or so.

I have my front differential welded fozzy locker style. I have use the feroza in more than 10 trails and so far so good. One thing that you will
notice though when you weld the front differential is it is very hard to turn in very tight trails. Imho its a minor inconvenience compared to the benefits of a lock front specially in the trails. IFS tends to lift a wheel when driving in ruts and obstacles. A lock front would be a big help
to the rear lsd.
