Hi,
I am thinking of doing some tinting of my rear quarter windows and rear window to reduce the sun's heat on my fridge.
Is this the way to go or are there better ways?

I have seen then the darkest legal tint is 35% but is this enough or are some types of tints better than others - i.e. not all about the % darkness.

Looking for others experiences and opinions...

Apparently now you can get a tint which has a reflective surface, almost like a one way mirror, i dont know if it is legal or not, but i imagine it would be best for reflecting away a lot more heat than standard tint?

You can tint your rear windows as dark as you want.
The legal darkness stuff only applies to the front windows.
Some cars even come from the factory with "privacy tint" on all the windows except the fronts.

darkest legal is like 18% i think youll find. maybe its different from state to state.
20% is quite light, i have 22% on my DD and its still not THAT dark. a 35% will be good for the back windows, quite dark but youll still be able to see out if needed.

I got some left over sisalation (sp?) - the silver/blue insulating "paper" that thay put on before the the roof sheets on a house - and stuck it on the inside of my windows. Easy to install/remove for when you go away and it reflects lots of heat/light.

May be a bit shiny for the cars behind you though but I've seen it on lots of touring types vehicles. Not sure if its legal, can't see why not.

In Uni we did some tests of a number of different window tinting films, looking at factors for UV, visible & infrared transmission. Different tints have different performance in the different bands - the tint with the best reduction in infrared wasn't a particularly dark tint.

Tint is scaled 0% being darkest and as the number increases the lighter it is.

ok my bad. then it must be 28% ish... mine is 22% im sure of that, and it is 4% over legal dark

I am wondering now whether something highly reflective on the back quarter windows would be the way to go, like cut up some sun shades. On my Patrol the last owner did that but it looked pretty tatty, they way hie did it anyway. Wouldnt black tint make the actual windows get hot, where a silver foil would be cooler?

I have even thought of painting them from the inside, since on my Suzuki the rear quarters are really small and dont provide any peripheral vision.

Have to be tint on the rear window though.

How about interior louvres like on granddads old Kingswood? Nah...

I ust got a couple of those reflective windscreen shades, the silver ones. Cut them to size and mount them with double sided tape to the back windows on the GU. The back two passenger windows have the window sox on them and I also have one on the rear small door which is in front of the fridge. This keeps the heat down considerably and cost bugger all and isn't permanent.

Tint is graded by the amount of light that will pass through it.
T35 will allow 35% of available light through it. It is also the darkest legal tint you can get.
Beware if you have an aeriel on your back window (ie GU Patrol). If you get metalised film. It will stuff the reception.

Apart from the tint. I have a reflective sun visor that I position to keep the fridge out of direct sunlight. For $2 you can't go wrong.
The Evakool doesn't have an issue with 50deg + temps inside the Patrol. The sunvisor stops you from burning your hand when getting a cold rum from inside.

generally as stated darkest legal on fronts then one step darker for the rest.... stops a hug amount of heat in car then i have just bought factory slim line windshields allows each front windows to be left down 1 inch each side. Has proven to keep car about 5degrees cooler allowing some airflow and frighe is cycling allot less often. Eg working much less for same effect and increasing battery life when camped.

Tint is cheap enough so i vote tint

insulation a bit of over kill in my opinion and looks a little bodgy ..... remembering this is for fridges not esky's...

maybe kein rudd will insulate all our cars for free

x2. Works well and cheap as chips. i even put sunshade on my back window too, No one can see in and 1 window sock is removed when camping to allow easy acess to fridge so i dont have to open door.

personally i got one of those window shades, and wrap it over my fridge & or esky. works a treat on the waeco fridge or iceetek eskys.

doesnt require too much effort or cost and works fine.
