Engine rebuild

hey fellas i'm sure you all know that i threw a rod in my roza and ended up with a whole in the block.... theres a possiblity of getting a block (nothing else in the engine bay of my parts truck) tore out, cleaned, and inspected before it is shipped down to me if its good. if thats the case, the block itself has about 90,000 miles on it, should i rebuild the the block (pistons, crank, etc etc etc) or can i just slap on the top end of the engine (already had the head rebuilt right before the thrown rod), intake, exhaust, and all the of the other junk under the hood..... anything i should look out for? suggestions? trying to do my home work for i may be getting the block within the month if everything's a go.

get a compression test done on the replacement motor, this should give you some idea as to how good it is.
In the short term I'd probably drop the whole unit in and see what happens. Reason being the head you have has been rebuilt and may increase pressures internally, this may then result in the new motor failing.
With only 90,000 on it I dont recon its worth changing heads or rebuilding at this stage...... really comes down to 2 things, ....
1:
if you have the spare $$$$ and want it done right and done once then rebuild it
2:
If its tests ok why waste the $$$$ rebuilding it and swaping heads etc... On the bright side you could always sell the rebuilt head to offset some of the cost of the new motor.

well v8 i guess i forgot to mention some details... there is no head on the other block... i have JUST the block alone.... the rest of the engine has been basically stripped before i bought the parts truck.... so how do i test it? slap on the head and do a compression test? then go from there? and since i just recently had the head rebuilt and installed new gaskets.... would i be able to use the gaskets again or the head or will i have to buy new ones? anything else?

well, with an engine that is already half apart, I would finish the job. Rings and bearings, check the crankshaft, put i tback together with the new head on it, bobs your uncle. If you know what your doing

I have this "thing" about 4 cylinders, where I consider them "old" after 100 000km - this is probably because I have a habit of running them hard

After 90 000 miles, I would not even contemplate NOT replacing rings and bearings in the bottom end, particularly as the engine is already stripped down so far. I've stripped a few "parts" engines and found broken rings and stuffed ring grooves which I hadn't even suspected - but a better mechanic than me might have seen signs.
On the gaskets issue, again I would not consider reusing gaskets. The cost of new gaskets vs the time and effort which may be required to replace them, I think it's pretty cheap insurance.
Do it in the name of "peace of mind."

as usual Heath, you're the voice of reason. you're right. a V8 is just dumb. so while you're building that motor, fit up some low compression forged pistons, o-ring the block, polish and shot peen the rods, grind, linish the crank, get some custom turbo manifolds built, bolt a little snail on there, heah, far more sensible than a V8 conversion

SimplyPV, if you're happy with the performance of the stock motor, just freshen the 'parts motor' up.. pistons, rings, bearings etc..
it will be way more reliable & if it's what you're happy with, go with it!

yes i would like to keep the orginal type of motor in it.. thats where the real fun comes fun.. and boy i tell you, its more fun pissing some weak, macho jeep owner with a v8 off with a lil 1.6l inline four!

ok.. rebuild it is then.... anything i should look for on the crankshaft? reuse the pistions but replace rings? check.. writing a list down... sadly i dont have much money to put into the engine so none of that fancy stuff.. my goal is to get her back on the road and do atleast 150 k miles on her! gonna make her last a LOOOONG time...

god permitting of course. will let you all know how things check out with the block and whats goin on after that. thanks for advice fellas
