Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Hello,

First post here.
New owner of a 89 pajero 4d56t, It's the MMC model.

Anyway, My dad was driving it yesterday and it just randomly had nothing. Got a mate to tow him home. Turned out it broke the cam shaft bolt, and it was seized.

Does anyone know why it done this? And what we can do to fix it?

After a little bit of research,

Could it be possibly that the fulla before me didn't do an oil change or top up in a long time? Talking like 30-35k ?

Because when I got it, It had a broken rocker arm thingo.
We replaced that and it happened again.
When I got it I change the timing belt + counter balance shaft belt and the oil and oil filter.

This time when we took the tappet cover off one of the rockers were broken again.

So could this mean because he didn't keep the oils up it has seized from lack of lubricant? (oil)
And us not noticing didn't realise and it just did the same thing again?

Hopefully meaning if we put the new cam + roller rocker arm thingo in, it should be fine?

I would be as very least removing the sump and cleaning the oil pickup and sump. A lack of servicing will cause the oil to solidify and will block the pickup. Also i would check that the valves have not bent. Can't remember if these engines are free running or not however being a diesel i would say not. In that case the head would need to be removed also and valves, guides etc replaced.

I know of one other that had this happen.

It was after the rocker caps had broken from a broken belt - standard 2.5 stuff.

1 of the rocker caps has an extra oil gallery in it which feeds the rocker shaft. Any one of the rockers can fit its fitting but don't have the hole. This was not put back in the right place and leads to it not having any lubrication and resulting in the camshaft bearings siezing and breaking the bolt.

How do I know? - I did it myself....

It's all good now.

We cleaned it all up and replaced with a new cam and rocker arm.
Done 150kms and been 4x4 =p.

She's holding up quite fine =)


Now I have to lift the gal.
