Patrol gearbox chonking

Post by rotate_gq »

Hey everyone,
the gearbox in my rb30 gq was up to shit, so i bought another one and a new clutch. A friend who's a mechanic (at a gearbox place) pulled the box down and said it was in top nick, synchro's were perfect, gears were perfect, everything was great and that it'd be a waste of money to rebuild it.
I used (after being recommended by a clutch-man) an exceedy "sports tuff" clutch, the same used in a GTR skyline.
had these put in over the last week, the flywheel still had machine marks on it, so we decided to leave it, replaced spigot and throwout. box shifts great, and makes almost no noise when driving. But on the 150k drive home, when i hit traffic and was slowing down, i noticed a chonk chonk chonking noise coming from the front of the box. slows down as you wash off pace, happens in or out of gear with the clutch in or out, but more noticeable with the clutch in/in gear. you can feel the chonking throughout the car. It's got me pretty worried as i've gotta drive it a few hundred k's for work this week. Anyone got an idea?
