Use Castrol RX super
Super Cheap sell 20L drums at very competitive prices (cheapest I have found).

i guess at the time i just didn't have camera.
but i've seen it leave a TD42 a mess.
Also 3 petrol engines full of crap aswell.
LOL @ topline oil. what a joke.

id suggest delo400 or shell rimula x.
theres a few threads on the subject and theres much contention surrounding the HPR heavier grade oils...

in saying that how often were these cars serviced every five thousand or every fifty thousand and the reason diesel oil turns to sludge is because of lack of service and detergants in the oil.

Do some searches, its been discussed, there was some discussion about calcuim based oils and magnesium based oils - can't remember exactly, one of them was recommended for jap diesels, one wasn't (was more aimed at american stuff (cat, cummins etc) I know that RX super wasn't ideal - thats why Castrol make Jmax - for jap diesels. Rimula X was the shell equivalent of Jmax - the correct oil for jap diesels.
Can't recall any others - a search will turn up answers
Fwiw i run rimula X, change it and filters every 5k, works out about $70 per change - (20l of rim x is about $100 and 2 fleetgaurds are $20 - depending on year of td42)
Don't ask about filters
that'll open a can of worms! once again plenty of discussion on them!

Anything that complies with Jaso DH-1 standard.
Of which, most everything mentioned above is not ...
(Edit: Apart from the above post which is spot on)
And as for the Penrite posts ...

the TD42 was every 5000km
one of them was my old car that got done every 5000km
one of them was my old apprentice that did his every 10 000km.
one was a customers car that had unknown history.

nissan td42 requires an oil with a minimum 3000 ppm (parts per million) of calcium as it is a very high soot motor.
3 from memory are:
shell rimula X
castrol cxj
caltex delo 400

Nutha vote for Rimula X.
Wish Woop's engine rebuild photos were still up..
560,000 klms he removed the head, and using oil /filters each 5000klms, you could see the cross hatching in the bores from new still.
YMMV

x3. This is what i have used on the last few diesels i've owned.
However i could be persuaded to make a change next service.
My old man used Rimula X.

I'm biased, because i work for cummins, but i would definatly go with valvoline premium blue. Good ash content and more than suitable for a TD42. Good oil, and good filtration is cheap insurance.
More than happy to help anyone on the forum out with lube/filters, shoot me a PM.

yeah i use premium blue aswel. mainly cause i work at a transport company and have it in bulk tanks.

As to Penrite Oils if your using HPR your using the wrong one, for the non turbo you should be using HPR 15 and the turbo versions should use HPR 5.
The HPR version of the oil was designed for older motors or motors that have had a hard life and have started to use oil.
HPR DIESEL
High viscosity engine oil for use in older diesel engines operating in extreme climates, under high loads or where oil consumption with conventional viscosity grades is a problem. May be used in turbocharged engines. SAE 20W-60, API CH-4/SJ, ACEA A3/B3, M2C 911-A1, Global DLD-1
HPR DIESEL 5
Synthetic performance engine oil for use in the modern generation of high performance diesel engines including turbocharged. Ideal where this viscosity or SAE 5W/10W-30 is recommended. Primary recommendation for Land Rover Td5, Range Rover/BMW Td6 and Holden Jackaroo 3.0L diesel engines, Mazda/Ford diesel engines, Iveco, Mercedes and in diesel engines fitted with hydraulically controlled fuel injectors. Vehicles with DPF must use HPR 0. SAE 5W-40, API CH-4/SL, ACEA A3/B4/E4, MB 229.5, VW 506.00/506.01, Global DLD-2/3
HPR DIESEL 15
Semi-synthetic oil designed for use in most modern direct and indirect injection diesel engines including turbocharged. Ideal for new diesel vehicles under manufacturer’s warranty and normal driving conditions.
SAE 15W-50, API CH-4/SL, ACEA A3/B4, M2C153F/G, Global DLD-1/3, VW 505.00
The above info is from the sales stuff they sent to where I worked (they are distributors).

the problem with those penrite oils is they have no zinc dithiophosphate in them.
ZDDP is the best high pressure additive known to oil companies.
due to emissions regs you can't have it in modern engines.
The problems start when trying to use these zero ZDDP oils in older engines.
Older engines are just not designed to run with modern oils.
the fuchs and gulfwestern have the highest content of ZDDP of ANY oil sold in Australia. the gulf western XDO is so high it can't be sold out of Aust.
of the high ZDDP oils the XDO also has the highest ash content.

So, Ladies,
I'm doing a service this weekend - what oil am i buying?? Chances are i'll have to get the shop to order it in if it isn't one of the "normal" brands. I can also get stuff through Bursons too though.
This will be my last service before the turbo goes on. (

Yeah, thats why i've been using HPR - reasonable price, big name.
I just thought there might've been someone like isuzurover thats actually gone and done testing etc. But i suppose the oil companies have been spinning crap about how good their stuff is since the 1800's.

bingo..
try bypass filter setup and AMSOIL.. apparently your oil can last 80,000klms between changes.
