i am thinking of putting crawler gears into my hilux its 5 speed out of 88 model. how good do they work and are they worth the money.i have never put them in and wondering if u can put them in yourself or get it done professionally.
how big can u go b4 they start to slow down ur high range and will they slow down ur 2wd.
and where would i get them from.thank u

Lux transfer gears are always 1:1 in high this never changes.

i LOVE my crawler gears

4.7:1's from loctup.

Thats with a 3.0TD motor, first gear, low range, 4.5:1 diffs on 31" tyres.
fast idle of 1200rpm and it doesnt even crack 1kph!

Cheaper to put in duals and you have the best of both worlds!

but gears are stronger! as you don't have to worry so much about snapping the '2nd' input shaft.

Still putting the same torque on the output shaft between gears and duals, the final output ratio is about the same.

But if he has a diesel his low could very well be too low to be of much use with gears.

mine is a 4y petrol but its got a 5 speed diesel box in it.
i hav 4.8 diff gears on 33's.
the low range is fairly low but i would like a little slower cause the petrol struggles to turn the 33's up a hard hill and i was told to put crawler gears in cause they help out alot.
i thought of putting dual transfer cases on but i thought crawler gears are stronger and cheaper..

Go Both
Only drama with duals is it costs a bit more kus you need the drive shafts moded and preferably a Dual Tcase member.
Gears are always good and if you no like then go duals

So that's what they're like. 1st low actually looks useable.
Can't wait to get mine installed. Which I think will be a hassle as the lengths for the hilux swap box I've got and the standard 4runner one are different, so t/f case may not line up with my runner x-member.

But you should be using a longfield chromo output anyway!!! and its the inputs that blow, as you are now putting twice the torque into it!
the only upgrade ATM is the marlin total spline - 23 sline input to suit R series box's and are for std 2.28:1 ratio.
Gears and chromo output is the strongest and most cost effective.
