IBEX...a Rover but better

I do not think there is any of these in Australia but none the less felt I should share the truck. These are hand made (basically) in the UK. They generally use Land Rover drive trains and engines. A few things make them very very good off-road. Take a look at them and you wil see why. From what I understand these trucks come in kit form, generally body and frame only. Considering what you can have in the end it is a fairly good price I think. For less than a new Range Rover you can have one of these that will run circles around it all day long. An well...it is basically a rover!
Also this site has excellent pictures and info on these trucks. This IBEX was featured in Land Rover Mag in November 2001.

If you follow off-road racing and winch challenges you may reconize the IBEX from the 2002 or 2003 (can't recall the year) Rain Forest Challenge.

They say that they are better than a Rover,But....is it just me...or do they seem to show a lack of articulation? :)

I had a look at 2 of these rigs at last years Outback Challenge. Very nice machines. The way I saw them they were basically a defender with a hand made body and hand made chassis. Drivetrain and suspension were the same comfiguration as a stock defender.
In terms of articulation they perform the same way (and can be modified the same way) as a rangie or defender.

Yeah i agree Sam I had Neils Ibex from Scotland in my group(the one that reversed winched up the wall) one of the best features is the approach & departure angles
Also had the other Ibex(stop,stop,stop
) at the workshop for a few days so we all had a good look over and yeah configurations are all pretty much the same.
Nice truck & I think for winch challenge type stuff it has great approach & departure angles.
OOOh and its not a GQ or GU

good to hear that you guys know what an IBEX is...awesome to hear you have seen a few too!
We only have one in the USA and it is not even built yet so I have never seen one....
Besides the approuch and depart angles the Ibex is very good becuase of the super large wheel arches making it standard with larger tires. The central mounted winch system is also very nicely designed. Plus the body and frame is easy to fix if damaged badly due to how it is designed and built. While most IBEX are built using rover chassis not all are this way...some are running other trans/diffs/engines. For example a Ford Cosworth motor....
While I am a Nissan Patrol freak...I do like other rigs including some rovers. I even own other trucks besides Patrols. You must admit though that the design of the frame at least on series Rovers is not very good. Especially in the rear of the frame....
Not to start sh!t or gloat or even make fun of...but I have seen a Rover loose big time to a Patrol. A 4wd club I know often has pulling competitions, like tug of war but with trucks. Well last time a Rover went against a Patrol the Patrol pulled the entire rear axle out from under the Rover...to date a Rover has never beat a Patrol in this club doing tug of wars.

Tug-O-Wars are a dangerous practice, although it may seem fun it is a silly stoopid act of pleasure...............
EDIT: To date I have never seen a standard nissan do half the shit a bogged stock Rangie will do

So is it a tow rig or a 4x4 ? do you buy a rig to pull the back axle out of another car or to go wheeling in ? If so why don't you drive a kenworth ?
Just means the patrol is bigger and heavier, I could have told you that.

Nissans and toyotas are pretty much identical, up until the late GU and 100 series generally the toyota was always abit better off road, and a good old Rangie or a nice new defender are also Identicalish and they have always been better than toyotas

I agree with everything except the Rovers are better part!
and if I thought you were serious about the jeep part I would have to joke and BS a bit myself.
I do agree it does not show the abilty of a truck off road doing tug-o-war. I personally didn't witness the event but did find the story interesting. I went wheeling with the club I mentioned and they all are friends no matter what they drive. I would be happy to go 4x4ing and have wheeled with rover owners so don't get the impression I am anti-anything. I was not stating anything sucked on a Rover, simply that I feel the frame is weak in the rear, looking at it makes this obvious.
We all have our favorite trucks and well the Rover just does not top my list. Plus all trucks have weak points in one way or another...diff, frame, tranny, head, cooling system and so forth. Pick any 4x4 made...it will have at least one weakness. Otherwise people would not modify and build up 4x4's and things like the IBEX would not even exist.

Ibex have thier own chassis and do not use the rover one.

Not surprised, great big heavy dattos are heavy bloody things, they sink into bogs like a rock into water and I hate having to yank them out with the 90. On trips I try and make sure that the big heavy Nissans are behind someone else in line now, was wearing out too many snatch strops...
