Outer Limits 4x4 Board

G'day,

I have a Mitsubishi Jeep (looks like a CJ5 Jeep/shorty40) and am getting gassed really badly from exhaust fumes sucking into the cab.

It has full doors and a solid roof over the front seats but the canvas top is stuffed so I'm running it with no cover over the back.

The exhaust has no leaks (already fixed them and no help)

It has twin exhaust system that runs out the back with the exhaust tips roughly an inch past the back of the tub.

- Do other people have problems of getting gassed when they drive without the softop on?
- Where does the exhaust exit?
- am i better off with a side exit?
- a tip that faces the ground?

running my 3B diesel with non leaking single exhaust fed straight out the back pointing down I used to get gassed (not majorly but you could tell you were).. I ran a soft top with the back/windows open most of the time..

never had a drama with mine even with half doors, whether the soft top was on or off (dont have a hard top). Mine exits at the left rear corner and exits sideways.

Only pic I have that gives you an idea.

my exhaust exits like ray185's and no prob's in my soft top, i think if you change the exhaust point to the side and facing down slightly it wont suck in through the rear of the car.

if i drive with my rear window up in the rain - the rain sucks in and wets the windscreen from the rear!! on freeway speeds...so exhaust same thing

I used to run a bikini top on my sierra with no fumage. Then I put on a full softtop and when driving with a window open I get gassed heaps.
Maybe replacing floor bungs and the rear door seal would help...

Last thing I wanna do is brain my damage!

Check the choke is working properly if it's a carby petrol.

where did you get the Mitsubishi from as I want one of the 4 door hardtop ones

my sierra goes straight out the back i don't have to much of an issue

i think if it points down it would get brought back up and over by the wind passing under maybe straight out brings it away more effectively i dunno, mine sits under my bumper a little i think this helps.

Doesn't apear to be much ryme nor reason to it.

Spamwell, That is pretty well exactly how mine are running just the same on both sides.

Grimbo, picked her up out of the trading post, was an old offroad rally car from the 70's/early 80's been garaged most of its life. I think it originally came from South Africa as it has Kruger National Parks stickers on it.

zookimal, just picked up new leads and plugs etc to give it a proper tune up so that might help a bit but I figeure even properly burnt fumes arnt the best to be breathing in.

Looks like I need to check and fix all the seals and then experiment with windows up and down etc to see what works best. Looks like people seem to have no fumes regardless of exhaust position

mine used to point straight out and i got gassed bigtime - now i've added a droopy to the end of it its all fixed...

Wrangler exhausts exit near the back and taper down. I've never had a gassing problem. You can see it behind the rear wheel in this pic:

Same here. Droopy tip added, turned slightly to the outside of the car. Gassing problem solved.

Mine exits about 100mm infront of the rear of the car - The original pipe was cracked so off it came.
A droop may be a good fix!

AFAIK Its not legal to squirt to the footpath side of a vehicle.

On yours experiment with adding a longer bit of pipe, an droopy end etc.

Diff vehicles can all have diff effects on vac in rear sucking in gasses.

It can make you very sick and even crash without ever knowing why...
