chain rattling noise

gday, ive got a gen 1 pajero shorty with the 2.6 astron motor, and i'm hearing a weird noise when i turn my car off, like a chain rattling (maybe timing chain),and sometimes it shudders after shutdown for up to 2 or 3 seconds making all sorts of weird noises.

just wondering what this could be., cheers.

Dieseling on shutdown usually means you need to lift the head and decoke the pistons/cyl head/valves. It is caused by the hot carbon deposits being able to ignite any fuel that is drawn in through the inlet manifold in the absence of any spark from the ignition.

In a carburetted vehicle this extra fuel flow can be common, sometimes caused by a faulty idle cutoff solenoid (if fitted).

Not all that common in multi point/single point EFI vehicles unless one of the injectors is stuck partly open. Good clue to this is a lengthy delay in starting the engine as the fuel pump has to reprime and pressurise the fuel lines (can usually be heard when you switch ignition to "On" before starting).

Um before you go ripping it apart, check the tune.

These old Japanese engines run a pretty lean idle mixture & if it is idling too fast then they will run on. More common than coke in the engine, especially on these old dungers. They ping like a bartool if they ae coked up but they were not really renouned for it like say a Crossflow Falcon engine.

The carbies also have a couple of diaphragms that can spilt & cause running on.

It is also common for the timing chain in them to rattle on shut down, not a big issue until the chain starts to rattle while the engine is running. It is still not really an issue then, they will go for eons with rattl timing chains. I was actually sitting next to a TR Magna today that was ratting so bad that it sounded like a diesel.

Check your cheap basics first.
