what should i do? motor has a distinct rattle/knocking in it so whats the best & most cost effective option? rebuild a 300,000km old motor or replace the whole driveline with 2nd hand vitara gear if i could find it? how hard is a conversion? should i keep the original running gear? both the gbox and tcase have oil leaks in the back

read the bible
in my opinion is get a full rebuilt motor / gearbox
but others might think a v6 crummy door motor is the go

These aren't the same thing.
Most cost effective would be a wrecker sourced swift 1.3 in reasonable condition and you swap your cam, sump etc over.
The best "sensible" conversion IMHO is a 1.6 16V baleno motor including computer and loom with a jimny inlet manifold. There's about $2500 in bits + installation.
Do a search though. This question has been discussed bajillions of times.

why jimny inlet manifold?
puts it lower for the engine bay i am guessing?

Baleno motor gives you coil packs, slightly more HP (I think) and more sophisticated timing control (crank angle sensor and cam angle sensor)
Baleno inlet manifolds don't have the water neck/thermostat on them so sorting that out is a PITA. The Baleno manifold is neater than the Jimny one though.
Here's a pic. The 1.0 airbox will be replaced with a Hiace filter, and this car will end up with Power steer and onboard air, neither of which are fitted in this photo.
The G16 B coil pack motor is a fair bit nicer to work with t han the Vitara (distributor) motor - no crossover pipe, no dizzy, no afm.
Steve.

early model g13bb manifold, as it has the throttle body pointing the right way and has a thermostat housing in the right spot.

true 'cost effective' and 'best' 2 different things. 2500 sounds 2 expensive 4 me at the moment so might just be a rebuild... everything seems pretty cheap 4 zooks. how much would i expect 2 pay 4 a full rebuild? cheers fellas

nice and neat.
i know what u mean by the crossover and that. Can a vitara 16v be converted to coil pack and no afm?
i do have a baleno head and everything from motor cept the block here but it is from a dizzy model also.
conversion - depends on how much u can do yourself. spanners and wiring and that.

If you're doing it yourself just get a 2nd hand lowish K's motor, if looked after properly you can get good K's out of the 1.3

X2 VR Rodeo.
Most rebuilds are done cheap IMHO and the end result is a short life. $2500 will disappear pretty quick.
A low Km swift motor should give you years of service.

well i dnt really want 2 spend 2 much until i hav2... and besides i'd like 2 spend the money elsewhere like making my jeep and suzi better off road if i realy dnt need 2 do any work 2 the zook
im not sure if its that bad really anyway. it blows no smoke and doesn't breathe out the top of the motor when i take the filler cap off. the motor sounds a little rattly tho and im thinking it probably is just the tappets... ive heard zooks b4 that dnt sound much different with only 150,000 km on the clock. r they a 'growly' motor? im sure the sound is coming from the top of the motor...
also the t/case and g/box have oil leaks out the back around the output shafts...
r any or these jobs particularly hard 2 do?

what k's can a 1.3 do if properly looked after?

300-350k if pampered but i spose the average would be 220-250k
the harder you thrash the shorter life expectancy it will have

I picked mine up a few years ago with 170 000 on it, now has 220 plus on it and has had a combination of 29's, 31's and 33's on it and it knows the full rev range in particular the top end of it and it is still going strong. Oil gets dropped every 4-5 months regardless of k's and I always have run coolant through the properly sorted system. So I would be hoping for high 200's at least.
