Outer Limits 4x4 Board

I am looking at buying a hilux and i have seen a few with a 4 cylinder Unleaded Carburettor 2.4L and i was just wondering what they were like to drive on road and off road???? and what are they like compared to the 2.8L deisel.

that would be the 22r. there not a bad motor, never had any troubles with it. the only down fall is there fairly chew the fuel when you give it to them. but on the road i get around 7.8km per liter which isnt to bad. compared to the 2.8 they are more zappy because its petrol, and i would think the 2.8 may get better fuel econmy, but fairly slow.

the 22r and 22re's are great motors, ive always had troubles keeping them cool, hence ive blown a couple of head gaskets. the other downfall is the single row timing chain, although that can be replaced with the 2.2L (20R) double row chain...

afaik 4y is 2.2

im not too sure about down there, but they had the 2.2 (20r) from the mid 70s to 81, then the 2.4 (22r) til 85.5. then the 2.4 injected (22re) til 95 i think. i wish they had a 2.8L diesel up here tho

I had a 1984 with a 4y in it, not sure of its capacity but was told it was 2.4, but i really dont know.

it was an ok motor. needed to warm up to run well. used about 13-15L per 100km.

i prefer the 2.8 diesel engine. much tougher.

If your going to be driving it around town you might like the little bit extra acceleration from the petrol.

I have the 4y engine in mine and having done over 400thousand klms without a rebuild its still driving quite nicely.
My old man has a 22r in his and its going well and strong also.

On road its a hilux so not really made for comfort lol pretty hard springs etc.
Offroad obviously the diesel has a lil more torque But from my limited experience my petrol 4y does all my mates 2.8l diesel does and more.
I dunno if its just his car but in sand with a bit of a hill, even if he gets a lil run up the car looses revs quickly. whereas the petrol revs higher and stays there just continues on.
Could just be his car but.
